Castillo de Monterreal, en Bayona, visto desde el Alto de la Groba. Esta gran fortaleza, con 3 kil\u00f3metros de murallas, tiene su origen en el castillo medieval al que lleg\u00f3 la carabela La Pinta en 1493 en su regreso de Am\u00e9rica, siendo el primer lugar de Europa que tuvo noticia del descubrimiento del Nuevo Mundo. A comienzos del Siglo XVI los Reyes Cat\u00f3licos ordenaron ampliarlo y reforzarlo debido a la posici\u00f3n estrat\u00e9gica de Bayona. La fortaleza demostr\u00f3 ser ciertamente inexpugnable: en 1585 el corsario ingl\u00e9s Sir Francis Drake desembarc\u00f3 en las proximidades de Bayona y bombarde\u00f3 la villa, pero fue incapaz de tomarla debido a las formidables defensas del castillo. En 1966 se levant\u00f3 en el interior del recinto el Parador Nacional Conde de Gondomar, de propiedad estatal, que a\u00fan contin\u00faa su actividad hoy en d\u00eda. Para acceder al interior las murallas hay que pagar 1 euro. Hace unos a\u00f1os se contruy\u00f3 un paseo que rodea el castillo, con unas espl\u00e9ndidas vistas.<\/p>\n
