The worst atrocities often occur in it, but even there there is sometimes a place for humane and honorable treatment of the enemy.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2018\/09\/04\/the-military-salute-origin-types-curiosities\/\">The military salute: origin, types & curiosities<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2019\/08\/02\/spaniards-pay-homage-in-warsaw-to-the-heroes-of-the-1944-uprising\/\">Spaniards pay homage in Warsaw to the heroes of the 1944 Uprising<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p>In the middle of a war, it is very difficult to put hatred aside <strong>to pay tribute to the enemy who fell in combat<\/strong>, but although it seems something very rare, it has occurred on many occasions throughout history. And it is that <strong>fighting for your Homeland does not mean fighting with hatred or renouncing honor<\/strong>, and that is known by many who have served their countries honorably in various armies for centuries. Here are<strong> some examples of soldiers who were buried with honor by their enemies.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/6119\/6247451297_8f8126c775_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\"><\/p>\n<p>In the city of Corunna, Spain, there is the tomb of Sir John Moore, located in the San Carlos Gardens. <strong>Moore was a British general who died in the battle of Elvi\u00f1a on January 16, 1809, wounded by a cannonball<\/strong>, when he fought alongside the Spaniards against the Napoleonic invaders, covering the embarkation of the British troops returning to their country. <strong>Moore was a hero, a gentleman, and an honest and humanitarian military man.<\/strong> When the Napoleonic troops managed to conquer La Coru\u00f1a, t<strong>he French Marshal Jean de Dieu Soult ordered the construction of this tomb in homage to his enemy who fell<\/strong> in combat (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/elentir\/6247451297\/in\/photolist-aw4PBx\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">own photo<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51333469615_5df42b965c_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg of the German Army presiding over the burial of a British prisoner of war<\/strong> in Cologne, Germany, in 1917. The day before Richtofen, <strong>the greatest ace in German aviation during World War I (with 80 credited kills)<\/strong>, had been shot down by a Canadian pilot, Lieutenant Wilfrid \"Wop\" May. The Red Baron was a \"knight of the air\", as it was said at that time, and <strong>his enemies wrote the following epitaph on his grave: <em>\"Here lies a brave man, a noble adversary and a true man of honor. The German airmen had been shot down by British fighters. I have not found any information on when or where this photo was taken.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/1\/915\/42235645175_b96948f2fc_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\"><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2018\/07\/02\/filipinos-homenajean-a-los-ultimos-espanoles-de-filipinas-en-el-120-aniversario-de-su-hazana\/\">Philippine Army soldiers paying tribute to the Spanish soldiers who fought at the Siege of Baler (1898-1899).<\/a> The courage of those Spaniards, known as \"the last of the Philippines\", deserved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2019\/06\/30\/el-homenaje-del-primer-presidente-filipino-al-heroismo-de-los-ultimos-espanoles-de-filipinas\/\">the homage of the first president of the country, Emilio Aguinaldo<\/a>, who described his defense of the Church of San Luis, in Baler, as <em>\"an epic so glorious and so typical of the legendary courage of the sons of El Cid and Pelayo.\"<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2021\/06\/30\/el-homenaje-del-ejercito-de-filipinas-a-los-espanoles-que-lucharon-en-el-sitio-de-baler\/\">The Philippine Army pays this tribute annually.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>War is a horrendous thing.
