{"id":47469,"date":"2022-05-22T21:04:08","date_gmt":"2022-05-22T19:04:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=47469"},"modified":"2024-05-22T00:17:33","modified_gmt":"2024-05-21T22:17:33","slug":"the-story-of-a-lieutenant-who-destroyed-more-than-20-enemy-tanks-in-30-hours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/05\/22\/the-story-of-a-lieutenant-who-destroyed-more-than-20-enemy-tanks-in-30-hours\/","title":{"rendered":"The story of a lieutenant who destroyed more than 20 enemy tanks in 30 hours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are feats of war that demonstrate the value of having a skilled and highly motivated commander in the face of an invasion of his country.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2021\/08\/25\/the-history-of-finnish-soldier-simo-hayha-the-deadliest-sniper-of-all-time\/\">The history of Finnish soldier Simo H\u00e4yh\u00e4: the deadliest sniper of all time<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/05\/06\/mindanaos-p-40-ghost-plane-the-history-of-a-great-mystery-of-the-world-war-ii\/\">The P-40 ghost plane of Mindanao: the history of a great mystery of the WW2<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><strong>On October 6, 1973, taking advantage of Yom Kippur<\/strong> (the Day of Atonement, the holiest holiday in Judaism),<strong> a coalition of Arab countries led by Egypt and Syria invaded Israel<\/strong> through the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights. <strong>Lieutenant Zvika Greengold<\/strong>, born in a kibbutz founded in Israel by survivors of the Jewish resistance against nazism, was assigned to this last place.<\/p>\n<p>At just 21 years old, <strong>Zvika managed to round up two recently repaired British-made Centurion tanks<\/strong> and headed to the front with them, resisting an armored column of the Syrian Army's 51st Independent Tank Brigade, made up of T-55 tanks of Soviet manufacture. <strong>Using of the tactical advantage of the terrain, Zvika managed to destroy 10 enemy tanks<\/strong>, leading the Syrians to believe that they were facing a much larger force, so they beat a retreat.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52092004220_7ea9ff292a_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">\"Force Zvika\" painting by Howard Gerrard, depicting the exploits of Lieutenant Zvika Greengold during the Yom Kippur War.<\/div>\n<p><strong>After losing one of his two tanks, Zvika continued to fight<\/strong> until he found an Israeli armored column led by Lieutenant Colonel Uzi Mor, which he joined. The Israeli force suffered heavy losses. <strong>Zvika was injured. The driver of his tank died. Despite his injuries, the young lieutenant continued to fight<\/strong>, taking advantage of the still operational tanks he managed to find, and tirelessly facing outnumbered Syrian T-55 and T-62 tanks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zvika kept fighting<\/strong> when the rest of the Israeli tanks had already been damaged or destroyed and only his was left. <strong>At least 20 tanks destroyed by this brave lieutenant were confirmed<\/strong>, although some sources attribute the destruction of up to 40 or 60 enemy tanks to him, in <strong>an action that lasted almost 30 hours and that left the Israeli officer exhausted<\/strong>, having to be hospitalized after that fierce fight.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52091518918_e45dc746bf_o.jpg\" style=\"width:661px; height:auto; border:2px solid #7F7261;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">Print by David Bocquelet showing the Centurion Mark V tank used by Lieutenant Zvika Greengold in the Yom Kippur War.<\/div>\n<p><strong>For his feat, Zvika was awarded the Itur Hagvura (Medal of Valor), the highest decoration in the Israel Defense Forces.<\/strong> In 1974, Zvika was discharged with the rank of Captain.
