{"id":47683,"date":"2022-06-11T20:48:10","date_gmt":"2022-06-11T18:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=47683"},"modified":"2022-06-14T23:00:51","modified_gmt":"2022-06-14T21:00:51","slug":"the-huge-british-aircraft-carrier-hms-prince-of-wales-on-her-visit-to-rota-for-an-exercise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/06\/11\/the-huge-british-aircraft-carrier-hms-prince-of-wales-on-her-visit-to-rota-for-an-exercise\/","title":{"rendered":"The huge British aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales on her visit to Rota for an exercise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This Thursday, June 9, the British aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales arrived at the Rota Naval Base, in Spain, on the occasion of the Flotex 22 exercise.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2015\/12\/21\/el-ensamblaje-del-portaaviones-hms-prince-of-wales-de-la-royal-navy-a-camara-rapida\/\">El ensamblaje del portaaviones HMS Prince of Wales de la Royal Navy a c\u00e1mara r\u00e1pida<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"http:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2016\/02\/22\/asi-es-un-zafarrancho-de-vuelo-con-aviones-eav-8b-harrier-ii-en-el-buque-juan-carlos-i\/\">As\u00ed es un zafarrancho de vuelo con aviones EAV-8B Harrier II en el buque Juan Carlos I<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p>This exercise is organized by the Spanish Navy and naval forces from five countries participate in it. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navaltoday.com\/2022\/01\/11\/hms-prince-of-wales-begins-journey-as-nato-flagship\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HMS Prince of Wales is currently the flagship of the NATO Response Force Task Force.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52139165700_d89549a434_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Designated R09, <strong>HMS Prince of Wales is currently the Royal Navy's largest warship<\/strong>, alongside her sister ship HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08). The R09 was launched in 2017 and began active service with the British Navy on December 10, 2019.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52138916114_9af36fb76f_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The two Queen Elizabeth-class ships are recognizable as having two islands<\/strong>, instead of the single island that is usual for all other aircraft carriers. The island located closest to the bow is for the steering of the ship, while <strong>the second island, called FLYCO<\/strong> (Flying Control Position)<strong> has the mission of controlling all air operations on the ship.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52138677091_fe19c31f10_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The reasons for this configuration range from an enlargement of the flight deck area to better control of it from the FLYCO<\/strong>, as well as a reduction in turbulence on the flight deck and a better distribution of spaces on the lower decks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52138677081_c508fee34e_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The HMS Prince of Wales is a huge ship: it is 280 meters long<\/strong>, 39 meters beam at the waterline and 73 meters beam on the flight deck. Her displacement is 65,000 tons, more than double that of the Spanish aircraft carrier \"Juan Carlos I\" L-61.<strong> In the image below we can see the R09 and the L-61 together in Rota<\/strong>, an image that gives an idea of the dimensions of each one.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52138701818_2f2f8bc67b_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The minimum crew of HMS Prince of Wales is 700 people<\/strong>, which increases to 1,600 when all its aircraft are on board.
