The mine was located next to the Eagle River, and in addition a town was built up the mountain, 180 meters away, as a residence for the miners. The town was linked to the mine by a funicular. <strong>The history of Gilman ended when the mine became unprofitable and also contaminated the waters of the Eagle River with toxic substances.<\/strong> Due to the latter, in 1984 the United States Environmental Protection Agency ordered the town to be abandoned.<\/p>\n<p>The explorer Bob Thissen, author of the YouTube channel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/ExploringtheUnbeatenPath\/featured\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Exploring the Unbeaten Path<\/a>, has just published<strong> two interesting videos about this town and its mine:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Infamous Toxic Ghost Town in Colorado | ABANDONED\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CCXuJJiQDfA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One thing that stands out is <strong>the abandoned cars in the town<\/strong>, even some of them in accidents and in places where it is unlikely that anyone would have found out about the accident.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52206460952_05495d3df7_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The old mine, also abandoned and located by the river<\/strong>, looks much less idyllic.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52206460982_47753f2820_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The landslides have destroyed the funicular that linked the town with the mine.<\/strong> Today only its remains can be seen.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52207469061_b880e78d2c_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are some places in the mine, like these lockers, that look like something out of the movie \"Silent Hill.\"<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52207492118_5bd2d50489_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The sinister-looking mines are very long: they have <strong>75 miles (120 kilometers) of tunnels.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52206461067_4fdbe67c42_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>There are offices in the mines.<\/strong> They look like people have suddenly fled.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52206460962_ef86c03d41_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the place, underground, there is<strong> a huge industrial machinery that was used to process the ore.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52207740379_7e07b565a2_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%;
