{"id":48030,"date":"2022-07-16T23:54:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-16T21:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=48030"},"modified":"2024-07-16T00:36:48","modified_gmt":"2024-07-15T22:36:48","slug":"the-relics-of-the-world-war-ii-at-the-pearl-harbor-aviation-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/07\/16\/the-relics-of-the-world-war-ii-at-the-pearl-harbor-aviation-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"The relics of the World War II at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are many aviation museums that have pieces with a great history behind them, but the one we are going to see today is, in itself, an important piece of history.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2021\/12\/07\/figures-of-the-japanese-attack-on-the-american-base-at-pearl-harbor-in-1941\/\">Figures of the Japanese attack on the American base at Pearl Harbor in 1941<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/06\/27\/the-interior-of-the-b-29-bockscar-the-bomber-that-dropped-the-atomic-bomb-on-nagasaki\/\">The interior of the B-29 'Bockscar', the bomber that dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum was founded in 1996 on Ford Island<\/strong>, the former military base that bore the brunt of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2021\/12\/07\/figures-of-the-japanese-attack-on-the-american-base-at-pearl-harbor-in-1941\/\">the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor<\/a>, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941. <strong>The museum occupies two hangars that existed in the time of the attack: 37 and 79.<\/strong> It currently has 43 aircraft, including authentic relics of the Second World War. This week, the Youtube channel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/TheHistoryUnderground\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The History Underground<\/a> published an interesting video visiting that museum and showing some of those relics and the history behind them:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bullet Damaged Hangars &amp; The BEST View of Pearl Harbor!!! | History Traveler Episode 223\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JNn16NynMmQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You can see some screenshots of the video below. I start with this image that has especially impressed me:<strong> a piece of the battleship \"Arizona\", sunk because of that Japanese attack.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52220660911_868a785c3b_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>n original Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter<\/strong>, recovered in the Solomon Islands and restored to like-new condition.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52220676068_53acc05e25_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>A Japanese Nakajima B5N \"Kate\" naval bomber<\/strong>, or rather what's left of it. 1,150 aircraft of this type were built, but only two remain in the world. This is the one in better condition of those two...<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52220929694_ae3f833e2a_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>A Grumman FM2 Wildcat naval fighter<\/strong>. It was the embarked fighter that the US Navy had on its aircraft carriers when the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor took place.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52220676123_bea4eefdd5_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>A Curtiss P-40 Warhawk.<\/strong> In Pearl Harbor there were 99 aircraft of this type belonging to the US Army at the time of the Japanese attack. During the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52220660961_399befddd2_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>A US Navy Douglas SBD Dauntless naval bomber.<\/strong> The aircraft preserved in the museum was originally used in the Battle of the Coral Sea.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52220676168_fcd9be0471_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>A Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber with a curious history:<\/strong> it had a forced landing in Papua New Guinea.
