{"id":48176,"date":"2022-08-01T23:17:55","date_gmt":"2022-08-01T21:17:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=48176"},"modified":"2022-08-03T07:00:44","modified_gmt":"2022-08-03T05:00:44","slug":"a-curious-bunker-from-the-world-war-ii-built-in-the-face-of-a-cliff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/08\/01\/a-curious-bunker-from-the-world-war-ii-built-in-the-face-of-a-cliff\/","title":{"rendered":"A curious bunker from the World War II built in the face of a cliff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During World War II, after the fall of France, Great Britain prepared to face a possible German landing on its shores.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/06\/09\/the-interior-of-two-well-preserved-third-reich-batteries-on-a-british-island\/\">The interior of two well-preserved Third Reich batteries on a British island<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/06\/06\/maisy-the-german-normandy-battery-that-was-mysteriously-buried-by-the-us\/\">Maisy: the German Normandy battery that was mysteriously buried by the US<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p>As part of this defense operation, <strong>coastal fortifications were built in the areas where the Germans could carry out this landing.<\/strong> Some of these fortifications took advantage of older constructions, such as <strong>a curious bunker located in the wall of a cliff in Dover, the British town closest to the French coast.<\/strong> Its white cliffs are the origin of the oldest name in Great Britain: Albion.<\/p>\n<p>A few months ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/VacantHaven\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">VacantHaven<\/a> <strong>published an interesting video about this bunker<\/strong>, accessing its interior and going through its galleries:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ABANDONED WW2 BUNKER - We climbed a cliff!!\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/siJrJv58jTE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The authors of the video point out that it is believed that part of the tunnel complex dates back to the mid-19th century, but <strong>the current structure dates from the beginning of World War II and was built to protect that beach<\/strong>, which it was a likely invasion point.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52257315075_9627d20932_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>VacantHaven notes that <em>\"<strong>sections of the tunnel are unlined, particularly the first length up from the original entrance<\/strong>, while other sections have either a brick wall facing or irregularly spaced brick piers and vaulted corrugated steel roofs above.<strong> Nearer the cliff face erosion has taken its toll<\/strong> and most of the machine gun post\u2019s original 0.6m thick reinforced concrete front wall and brick facing have now fallen away.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52256824171_03b0a0ac55_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The description of the video indicates that<strong>this bunker was initially in charge of the 70th Battalion The Buffs of the Royal East Kent Regiment<\/strong>, a unit of the British Army. In November 1940 he was taken over by the 5th Battalion Royal Marines Commandos. <strong>Its local headquarters was in the nearby town of Curfew House, off the Kingsdown Road<\/strong>, in a house that is now the local headquarters of the Royal British Legion, an association of veterans of the British Armed Forces.
