{"id":48486,"date":"2022-09-06T20:33:56","date_gmt":"2022-09-06T18:33:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=48486"},"modified":"2025-09-06T00:10:53","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T22:10:53","slug":"impressive-spanish-naval-review-500-years-after-the-first-circumnavigation-of-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/09\/06\/impressive-spanish-naval-review-500-years-after-the-first-circumnavigation-of-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Impressive Spanish naval review 500 years after the first circumnavigation of the world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On this day, on September 6, 1522, the Spanish Navy's ship \"Victoria\" completed the first circumnavigation of the world.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/08\/31\/the-air-arm-of-the-spanish-navy-in-old-photographs-of-the-us-national-archives\/\">The Air Arm of the Spanish Navy in old photographs of the US National Archives<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/05\/31\/the-isaac-peral-s-81-sails-for-the-first-time-with-another-spanish-navy-submarine\/\">The 'Isaac Peral' S-81 sails for the first time with another Spanish Navy submarine<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p>That historic milestone was made possible by <strong>the expedition started on August 10, 1519<\/strong> by five ships (\"Trinidad\", \"San Antonio\", \"Concepci\u00f3n\", \"Victoria\" and \"Santiago) <strong>commanded by Ferdinand Magellan, and after his death, by Juan Sebasti\u00e1n de Elcano.<\/strong> Spain was not only a pioneer with this expedition, but also for a long time: <strong>the second country to circumnavigate the world, England, took more than half a century to achieve this<\/strong> with Francis Drake's expedition between 1577 and 1580. In these 500 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2021\/04\/15\/la-armada-espanola-recuerda-su-lista-de-buques-que-han-circunnavegado-la-tierra\/\">15 ships of the Spanish Navy have made this long journey<\/a>, the most recent in 2019 (the frigate \"M\u00e9ndez N\u00fa\u00f1ez\").<\/p>\n<p>On the occasion of this anniversary, <strong>this morning the Spanish Navy held a naval review presided over by H.M. King Felipe VI<\/strong> from the training ship \"Juan Sebasti\u00e1n de Elcano\". <strong>Aircraft from the 3rd, 5th, 9th and 10th squadrons and a total of 12 Navy ships have participated:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The aircraft carrier \"Juan Carlos I\" L-61.<\/li>\n<li>The amphibious assault ship \"Galicia\" L-51.<\/li>\n<li>The combat supply ship \"Pati\u00f1o\" A-14.<\/li>\n<li>The frigate \"Almirante Juan de Borb\u00f3n\" F-102, of the \u00c1lvaro de Baz\u00e1n class.<\/li>\n<li>The frigates \"Victoria\" F-82, \"Reina Sof\u00eda\" F-84 and \"Navarra\" F-85, of the Santa Mar\u00eda class.<\/li>\n<li>The maritime action ships \"Tornado\" P-44 and \"Audaz\" P-45.<\/li>\n<li>The patrol ship \"Vig\u00eda\" P-73, of the Serviola class.<\/li>\n<li>The patrol ship \"Medas\" P-26, of the Anaga class.<\/li>\n<li>The deep-sea tug \"Mar Caribe\" A-101.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, <strong>a replica of the ship \"Victoria\" that made the first circumnavigation of the world<\/strong> also participated, as well as numerous civil vessels. The naval parade, which has had as its central point Sanl\u00facar de Barrameda (where the ship \"Victoria\" arrived 500 years ago) began at Punta Candor, in Rota, and ended south of Chipiona, at a distance of approximately four miles from the coast.
