In his speech on the occasion of this conference, the President of the Government Pedro Sánchez mentioned the countries who "suffered fascism", but has not dedicated a single word to those who suffered from communism, a totalitarian movement as criminal and anti-democratic as Nazism, but which has killed many more people than the Third Reich.

These forgetfulnesses are not new. The text of the aforementioned law refers to fascism and Nazism, appealing to the "European democratic memory", but says nothing about communist dictatorships, responsible for the deaths of millions of people. It is still an act of cynicism that the Spanish left has appealed to that European memory while forgetting the terror and suffering that half of Europe experienced under the communist yoke. And it does so simply because the ideology of those dictatorships is the same as that defended by Sánchez's government partners: the communists of Podemos and Izquierda Unida.

The European resolution that condemned the crimes of Nazism and Communism

The left's amnesia about communist crimes is more than just a scandalous sectarian attitude: moreover, does not comply with resolution P9_TA(2019)0021 of the European Parliament, approved on September 19, 2019 and whose title recalls "the importance of European remembrance for the future of Europe". But the memory of that resolution was not sectarian: the text recalled that "the Nazi and communist regimes carried out mass murders, genocide and deportations and caused a loss of life and freedom in the 20th century on a scale unseen in human history."

In addition, the resolution condemned " in the strongest terms the acts of aggression, crimes against humanity and mass human rights violations perpetrated by the Nazi, communist and other totalitarian regimes", as well as "all manifestations and propagation of totalitarian ideologies, such as Nazism and Stalinism, in the EU", and criticized the regime of Vladimir Putin for continuing to "continue to whitewash communist crimes and glorify the Soviet totalitarian regime."

The requests of that European resolution that Sánchez has not fulfille

On the other hand, the European resolution calls for some specific things:

First, the resolution calls on "all Member States of the EU to make a clear and principled assessment of the crimes and acts of aggression perpetrated by the totalitarian communist regimes and the Nazi regime."

El texto pide "all Member States to commemorate 23 August as the European Day of Remembrance for the victims of totalitarian regimes at both EU and national level."

Likewise, the text calls for "a common culture of remembrance that rejects the crimes of fascist, Stalinist, and other totalitarian and authoritarian regimes."

It also calls "for 25 May (the anniversary of the execution of the Auschwitz hero Rotamaster Witold Pilecki) to be established as International Day of Heroes of the Fight against Totalitarianism, which will be an expression of respect and a tribute to all those who, by fighting tyranny, demonstrated their heroism and true love for humankind, and will also provide future generations with a clear example of the correct attitude to take in the face of the threat of totalitarian enslavement." Let us remember that Pilecki was a member of the Polish resistance who fought Nazism and ended up being assassinated by the communists, for opposing the dictatorship established by Stalin in Poland at the end of the Second World World War.

Well then: Pedro Sánchez's government has not complied with any of these requests. At the institutional level, his government does not celebrate any of the two dates indicated (neither May 25 nor August 23), perhaps because that would imply paying tribute to the victims of communism. Likewise, and as I have already pointed out, the Sánchez government has also omitted any reference to the crimes of communism in its "democratic memory" law.

The Spanish socialists and their desire to cover up the crimes of communism

This attitude of "historical amnesia" on the left about communist crimes is not new. <a href="http://assembly.coe.int/nw/xml/XRef/Xref-XML2HTML-en.asp?fileid=17403&lang=en rel="noopener" target="_blank">When the Council of Europe condemned the crimes of communism in 2006, recalling "the massive human rights violations committed by the totalitarian communist regimes", the Spanish socialists of the PSOE voted together with the communists against that resolution.

Likewise, in 2019, when the European Parliament approved the resolution that we have reviewed above, the socialists tried to erase all mention of communism in the text. The reason was easy to guess: in the parliamentary group of European Socialists there are former unique parties of communist dictatorships that became "social democrats" in 24 hours. To condemn the crimes of communism would be to condemn themselves.

Finally, in March 2021, the parliamentary opposition brought to Congress the aforementioned EU resolution condemning Nazi and communist crimes: the left voted against the resolution. The socialists -among them Sánchez- and their far-left partners voted together against this condemnation of communist crimes, and during the parliamentary debate, the PSOE spokesman cited among the "defenders of the freedom" to the communist Santiago Carrillo, head of the Paracuellos massacre, in which 5,000 political prisoners, including 50 children, were killed during the Spanish Civil War. This gives a truly alarming image of the ethical and moral perversion that the Spanish left disguises as "democratic memory".

---

Photo: Efe.

The «democratic memory», as the Spanish left calls its eagerness to impose its vision of history, forgets millions of victims of totalitarianism.

[19536,10398
10444,1062,693,2721,7841,11462
post-49152","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-we-said-yesterday","category-spain","tag-communism","tag-izquierda-unida","tag-psoe","tag-pedro-sanchez-castejon","tag-podemos","tag-spain
