At 1:40 p.m. local time, <strong>an F-35B from Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121 (VMFA-121) \"Green Knights\"<\/strong>, based at MCAS Iwakuni (Japan), made a preventive landing in the United States Air Force air base at Kadena, on the Japanese island of Okinawa, due to electrical problems. Around 3:00 p.m. local time, <strong>an NHK camera observed that the plane was nose down:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"F-35B stealth fighter collapses on runway after landing over electrical problem\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QHozPDb_MYM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>A local media video has been released showing how the accident occurred<\/strong>, which took place when the plane was towed down the runway at the Kadena air base:<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uQVXlmac7RU<\/p>\n<p>We can see here some captures of the video. In the images it can be seen that <strong>the plane was tumbling and that after a moment it stopped:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52538674988_552d8220ea_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At that moment, <strong>the tractor that was towing the plane continued to move and ended up tearing off the front landing gear<\/strong>, causing the plane to fall on its nose. Apparently, the plane could have activated the brakes in the moment before folding the nose landing gear, which is made up of a single wheel (unlike the F-35C naval version, which has two):<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52537662287_848ff24e02_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The result is what we see under these lines. <strong>The plane may have severe damage to one of its most advanced systems:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lockheedmartin.com\/en-us\/products\/f-35-lightning-ii-eots.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the EOTS (Electro-Optical Targeting System)<\/a>, a system that provides precision air-to-air and air-to-surface targeting capability to the F-35. <strong>The EOTS is housed in the lower part of the nose<\/strong>, just forward of the nose landing gear housing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52537662317_d2742c52dc_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to NHK, <strong>the Marine Corps is investigating the causes of the problem that led to this accident.<\/strong> This is not the first similar accident involving an F-35. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2018\/08\/22\/eglin-f-35-ends-nose-runway-after-series-mishaps.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In August 2018, a USAF F-35A suffered a problem with its nose landing gear<\/a> at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.
