{"id":50440,"date":"2023-02-15T23:52:14","date_gmt":"2023-02-15T22:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=50440"},"modified":"2025-02-15T00:10:50","modified_gmt":"2025-02-14T23:10:50","slug":"the-ruins-of-la-naval-of-sestao-the-cradle-of-three-battleships-of-the-spanish-navy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/02\/15\/the-ruins-of-la-naval-of-sestao-the-cradle-of-three-battleships-of-the-spanish-navy\/","title":{"rendered":"The ruins of La Naval of Sestao, the cradle of three battleships of the Spanish Navy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For more than a century, one of the most important naval industries in Spain was located in Sestao (Vizcaya): the \"La Naval\" shipyards.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/12\/05\/fadricas-touring-the-old-ammunition-depots-of-the-spanish-navy-in-san-fernando\/\">Fadricas: touring the old ammunition depots of the Spanish Navy in San Fernando<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/08\/27\/the-old-amphibian-port-of-the-spanish-navy-in-el-carmoli-base-of-the-vca-36-hovercraft\/\">The old amphibian port of the Spanish Navy in El Carmol\u00ed, base of the VCA-36 hovercraft<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p>Initially known as Sociedad Astilleros del Nervi\u00f3n, <strong>this company was founded in 1888 with the initial objective of building three battleships for the Spanish Navy<\/strong>, those of the \"Infanta Mar\u00eda Teresa\" class: the \"Infanta Mar\u00eda Teresa\" launched in 1890, and the \"Vizcaya\" and the \"Almirante Oquendo\", launched in 1891. <strong>The three were sunk in the naval battle of Santiago de Cuba<\/strong> on July 3, 1898. The shipyards were located together with Altos Hornos de Vizcaya, which for many years was the largest company in Spain, until its dissolution in 1996.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In 1908 the Sestao shipyards became part of the Spanish Shipbuilding Society (SECN)<\/strong>, a company whose priority was the construction of ships for the Spanish Navy, although these were built in their shipyards in Cartagena and Ferrol, so that <strong>La Naval de Sestao specialized in the construction of civilian ships, building more than 200<\/strong> (one of the most famous was the transatlantic \"Alfonso XIII\", launched in 1920 ) until the bankruptcy of the company in 2017. The staff of La Naval was taken over by Navantia, while <strong>the company's land was sold to VGP, which is proceeding with its demolition<\/strong>, in order to build a business park<\/p>\n<p>Before that demolition,<strong> two urban explorers had the opportunity to sneak into those ruins.<\/strong> A few weeks ago they published their visit to La Naval on the channel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube. com\/@okos\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Okos<\/a> from Youtube, as usual with great image quality (the video is in Spanish but has English subtitles, you can activate them in the bottom bar of the player):<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Me infiltro en un ASTILLERO abandonado (Cap\u00edtulo 7)\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A7cMDr11qds?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You can see here some screenshots that show only a small part of the interesting things that appear in this video.
