{"id":50520,"date":"2023-02-19T20:45:02","date_gmt":"2023-02-19T19:45:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=50520"},"modified":"2023-02-22T18:25:00","modified_gmt":"2023-02-22T17:25:00","slug":"avenger-the-air-defense-system-that-will-combat-russian-drones-in-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/02\/19\/avenger-the-air-defense-system-that-will-combat-russian-drones-in-ukraine\/","title":{"rendered":"Avenger: the air defense system that will combat Russian drones in Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Russian invasion of Ukraine has become one of the theater of war with the highest use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to date.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/02\/13\/poland-releases-the-first-images-of-ukrainians-training-with-leopard-2a4\/\">Poland releases the first images of Ukrainians training with Leopard 2A4<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/02\/13\/the-significant-increase-in-russian-casualties-in-ukraine-and-what-can-be-deduced-from-it\/\">The significant increase in Russian casualties in Ukraine and what can be deduced from it<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ukraine and Russia both use drones in their military operations.<\/strong> The Russians are receiving Iranian Shahed 136 kamikaze drones, a type of UAV that is also known as loitering munitions. <strong>Russia is also using these weapons against civilian buildings<\/strong>, in its strategy of trying to sow terror among the Ukrainian population. To combat that threat, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/11\/10\/us-sending-ukraine-400-million-in-military-aid\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in November the US announced the shipment of four AN\/TWQ-1 Avenger air defense systems<\/a>. On January 20, <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2023\/01\/ukraine-contact-group-meeting-caps-off-deluge-of-new-arms-pledges-but-no-german-leopards\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sending eight additional systems<\/a>. A week ago, <strong> those systems were seen disembarking in the German port of Bremerhaven <\/strong>, along with other military vehicles sent by the US as aid to Ukraine, as seen in this video starting at the 0:21 point:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The ship full of equipment sent by US to Ukraine arrives at a German port\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vnYUDQvhJHs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, <strong>although the US announced 12 Avenger systems in total<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chris__759\/status\/1625704786212360193\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in Bremerhaven 14 have disembarked<\/a>, in addition to some 60 M-2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, some 160 MRAP armored vehicles and also M-88 recovery vehicles, among other models. In the last few hours, <strong>Avenger systems have been seen in Poland en route to Ukraine<\/strong>, loaded onto trucks:<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\" style=\"margin:10px 0 10px 0;\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">US donated AN\/TWQ-1 Avenger air defense systems that were recently being unloaded in Bremerhaven, Germany are reportedly already in Poland on their way to Ukraine. <\/p>\n<p>The Avenger is a mobile short-range air defense missile system which protects against low flying aerial targets. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VMUVOBDnJV\">pic.twitter.com\/VMUVOBDnJV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NO\u00cbL \ud83c\uddea\ud83c\uddfa \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 (@NOELreports) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NOELreports\/status\/1627261269194551296?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 19, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>The AN\/TWQ-1 Avenger (also known as the M1097) <strong>is a short-range air defense system mounted on the back of a Humvee <\/strong>. It specializes in shooting down unmanned aerial vehicles, helicopters, planes and cruise missiles that fly at low altitude, specifically at <strong>a height of less than 3,800 meters and at a distance of up to 5.5 km.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52698754234_bd79fd4633_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Avenger's rotating turret is equipped with <strong>eight infrared-guided FIM-92 Stinger short-range surface-to-air missile launchers<\/strong> (i.e., they homing in on the heat given off by the target), located in four launcher mounts on each side of the turret.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52698983358_ef001e6514_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In addition, <strong>the Avenger carries a .50 caliber (12.7mm) FN M-3P machine gun<\/strong>, located under the right mounting of the Stinger missile launchers and fed by an ammunition box of up to 250 shells. The Avenger DEW version replaces the M-3P with an M-242 Bushmaster 25mm cannon. On the left side, under the Stingers launcher, is <strong>a FLIR sight and laser rangefinder.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52698492716_a42eb56c62_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This air defense system was developed in the US in the 1980s. <strong>It entered service in the US Armed Forces in 1989 and more than 1,100 units have been built to date<\/strong>, serving in the Army and the US Marines and in the Armed Forces of Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Lithuania and Taiwan. <strong>It was deployed in the Iraq War <\/strong> where it showed some limitations by not being able to fire its machine gun when the turret is pointed towards the front of the Humvee.
