{"id":50920,"date":"2023-03-23T23:41:22","date_gmt":"2023-03-23T22:41:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=50920"},"modified":"2026-03-23T08:57:53","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T07:57:53","slug":"us-army-aviation-museum-a-place-to-see-spectacular-historic-aircrafts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/03\/23\/us-army-aviation-museum-a-place-to-see-spectacular-historic-aircrafts\/","title":{"rendered":"US Army Aviation Museum: a place to see spectacular historic aircrafts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I have already pointed out on occasion, the United States is an ideal destination for fans of aeronautical museums.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/03\/15\/a-tour-of-the-fabulous-contents-of-the-aeronautical-museum-at-raf-cosford\/\">A tour of the fabulous contents of the aeronautical museum at RAF Cosford<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/03\/02\/air-park-zruc-a-winter-visit-to-an-aircraft-and-tank-museum-in-the-czech-republic\/\">Air Park Zru\u010d: a winter visit to an aircraft and tank museum in the Czech Republic<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p>One of them is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armyaviationmuseum.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Army Aviation Museum<\/a>, <strong>located on the Fort Rucker military base in Alabama.<\/strong> It is not among the largest aeronautical museums in that country, but it has some spectacular contents, although many things are missing, especially if we take into account that <strong>the current United States Air Force (USAF) had its origins in the United States Army Air Service (USAAS)<\/strong>, created in 1918 and converted into the Army Air Corps (USAAC) in 1926 and the Army Air Forces in 1942, until its conversion into a separate branch of the US Armed Forces in 1947.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52767299470_00bc593097_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The exterior of the museum is already a preview of the things that can be seen inside: <strong>it has a Bell AH-1S Huey Cobra attack helicopter on display on its fa\u00e7ade <\/strong>, 0-17109.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52767299445_035a71a40e_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Outside the museum is also the only built Boeing Vertol BV-347<\/strong>, an experimental helicopter with four-bladed wings and rotors made in 1970 from a CH-47A Chinook. The hydromechanical rotor control system was replaced by a fly-by-wire.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52767140184_aed93476c2_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Upon entering the museum premises you can see <strong>a set of sculptures in which each statue represents an era of US Army Aviation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52766348867_d879a05426_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The interior of the museum contains helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft and drones<\/strong> used by the US Army throughout its history, from World War I to the present day.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52767140079_0466fa61f1_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The museum preserves the two prototypes of the Boeing-Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche<\/strong>, an attack helicopter that made its first flight in 1996. The project was canceled eight years later.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52767145749_4a87c947b9_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here we see the Bell 209, with civilian registration N209J.<\/strong> It is the prototype of the AH-1G Huey Cobra attack helicopter.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52767381703_021a6a86a5_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Bell AH-1P Cobra 76-22600<\/strong>, later upgraded to the AH-1F version. It was one of the two original prototypes of the AF-1F Cobra.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52766886786_1cb3a54fe2_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>One of the most spectacular shows in the museum is \"Bravo Blues\"<\/strong>, which reproduces <a href=\"https:\/\/1cda.org\/history\/history-9cav\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a famous photo from the Vietnam War<\/a> showing a Bell UH-1H Huey from the 9th Cavalry Regiment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52767299485_76701158c6_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Another of the museum's spectacular displays is the \"Miss Clawd IV\" <\/strong>, which shows a Hughes OH-6A Cayuse, the Miss Clawd IV (number 68-17340), together with a Huey that was really Shot down in Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52766348907_5c236e31cf_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Another of the museum's historic aircraft is the Super 68<\/strong>, one of the Sikorsky MH-60L Black Hawk helicopters (90-26288) of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) that participated in Operation Gothic Serpent in Mogadishu, Somalia, in which two American Black Hawks were shot down.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about this museum, I encourage you to visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armyaviationmuseum.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">their website<\/a>, where it is available <a href=\"https:\/\/my.matterport.com\/show\/?m=4iLVz2fmsFH\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an awesome 3D virtual tour of their facilities<\/a>, which you can enjoy using virtual reality glasses.
