{"id":50966,"date":"2023-03-27T06:18:26","date_gmt":"2023-03-27T04:18:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=50966"},"modified":"2025-03-27T00:07:17","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T23:07:17","slug":"a-landing-of-m-60a3-tts-tanks-of-the-spanish-marine-infantry-in-egypt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/03\/27\/a-landing-of-m-60a3-tts-tanks-of-the-spanish-marine-infantry-in-egypt\/","title":{"rendered":"A landing of M-60A3 TTS tanks of the Spanish Marine Infantry in Egypt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Diving in the National Archives of the United States I have found some very interesting photos that I want to share with you.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/02\/27\/spanish-marine-infantry-the-units-that-make-it-up-and-their-material-resources\/\">Spanish Marine Infantry: the units that make it up and their material resources<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/08\/31\/the-air-arm-of-the-spanish-navy-in-old-photographs-of-the-us-national-archives\/\">The Air Arm of the Spanish Navy in old photographs of the US National Archives<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/nara.getarchive.net\/media\/a-spanish-army-m60a3-tts-main-battle-tank-mbt-travels-along-the-beach-at-el-81eb5f\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">data from said Archives<\/a>, photos were taken on October 20, 2001, during <strong>exercise Bright Star 02\/01 in Egypt<\/strong>, in which more than 74,000 soldiers from 44 countries participated. <strong>The Spanish Marine Infantry disembarked together with soldiers from Egypt and the United States on El Omayed beach<\/strong>, a desert area west of Alexandria.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52773932013_7c0a460a5b_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Company of Cars of the Amphibious Mechanized Group still existed<\/strong> (today Third Mechanized Landing Battalion, BDMZ-III) of the Tercio de Armada, equipped with 16 M-60A3 TTS Patton battle tanks, received in 1993 and which were phased out of service between 2010 and 2020.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52772915882_8b5e75b0c3_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I thought they were some nice photos to remember, because now the Spanish Marines no longer have tanks. Among the images of that landing, the US National Archives (NARA) also preserves <a href=\"https:\/\/nara.getarchive.net\/media\/a-spanish-army-m109a5-155mm-self-propelled-howitzer-comes-ashore-at-el-omayed-f94c0c\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this photo of a M-109A5<\/a>. The NARA indicate that it was of the Spanish Army, but the then commander of the BAA \"Galicia\" has confirmed to me that it was of the Marine Infantry.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52773705004_8dac2d8d7f_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As a curiosity, the NARA have also published <a href=\"https:\/\/nara.getarchive.net\/media\/the-spanish-navy-amphibious-assault-ship-lpd-juan-de-austria-l-51-sit-anchored-1dd247\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this photo<\/a> of that amphibious operation. Curiously, <strong>the Archive says that the ship in the background on the right is the Amphibious Assault Ship \"Juan de Austria\" L-51.<\/strong> This is obviously a mistake: the L-51 is called \"Galicia\".<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52772916017_af8024d989_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The ship on the left is an Egyptian Vydra-class landing ship<\/strong>, NATO's name for Soviet Project 106 ships.
