{"id":51850,"date":"2023-05-31T23:48:38","date_gmt":"2023-05-31T21:48:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=51850"},"modified":"2026-06-03T04:10:37","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T02:10:37","slug":"the-tunnel-and-the-bridge-of-cerro-salomon-some-formidable-ruins-of-the-riotinto-railroad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/05\/31\/the-tunnel-and-the-bridge-of-cerro-salomon-some-formidable-ruins-of-the-riotinto-railroad\/","title":{"rendered":"The tunnel and the bridge of Cerro Salom\u00f3n: some formidable ruins of the Riotinto Railroad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Riotinto mining basin, in Huelva (Spain), is a fascinating place with thousands of years of history.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/03\/10\/some-abandoned-steam-locomotives-that-were-waiting-for-a-nuclear-war\/\">Some abandoned steam locomotives that were waiting for a nuclear war<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/05\/24\/church-hill-a-railway-tunnel-in-which-two-men-and-a-train-are-buried\/\">Church Hill: A railway tunnel in which two men and a train are buried<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><strong>The first mining operations in the area began in Antiquity <\/strong>, before the arrival of the Romans, but it was not until the Contemporary Age when <strong>they were developed in depth by the British company Rio Tinto Company Limited, which established itself in the area in the second half of the 19th century<\/strong>, building a railway line to serve these mines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Riotinto Railway was inaugurated in 1875<\/strong> with a route of 83 kilometers that linked that mining operation with the city of Huelva. <strong>It was in service until 1984<\/strong>, and in the 1990s a part of its route was recovered as a tourist railway. <strong>One of the abandoned sections was that of Cerro Salom\u00f3n, in the town of Niebla<\/strong>, where the British engineer George Barclay Bruce built a bridge that was finished in 1875 and destroyed by a strong flood in 1888.<\/p>\n<p>That same year the <strong>steel bridge that still crosses the Tinto River was built, the work of British engineer Thomas Gibson<\/strong>. It is 68 meters long and leads to a 140 meter long tunnel. The bridge is known as Puente Salom\u00f3n (the tunnel receives the same biblical name) for being built next to Cerro Salom\u00f3n. <strong>Both the bridge and the tunnel were abandoned in 1984.<\/strong> Today both are in very poor condition, as we can see in this interesting video posted yesterday by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube. com\/@AventurasEntresierras\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aventuras Entresierras<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pernoctamos en un poblado ABANDONADO.
