The highest temperature in the world was recorded there: 56.7\u00baC. On the evening of January 24, 1952, <strong>a United States Air Force (USAF) Grumman HU-16 Albatross seaplane <\/strong> flew over that area.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52967645665_a98882128b_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">A Grumman HU-16B Albatross of the United States Air Force (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Grumman_HU-16B_AlbatrossCAMwhole.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nehrams2020<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>The plane had taken off from Mountain Home AFB air base in Idaho<\/strong> and was headed for San Diego, California, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baaa-acro.com\/crash\/crash-grumman-sa-16a-albatross-dolomite-canyon\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Archives<\/a>. When it was flying at an altitude of 11,000 feet (3,352 meters), in the middle of the night, <strong>the port engine caught fire<\/strong>. The six occupants of the plane decided to parachute, despite the fact that the other engine was working properly, perhaps out of fear that the plane would explode. <strong>The Albatross crashed on Towne Peak, at 7,287 feet (2,221 meters) <\/strong>, in Dolomite Canyon and 11 kilometers from Panamint Springs.<\/p>\n<p>As noted by <a href=\"https:\/\/worldwarwings.com\/hiker-visits-site-cias-albatross-crash-death-valley\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Worldwarwings.com<\/a>, the plane belonged to the 580th Air Resupply Squadron of the USAF and <strong>at the time of the accident it was making a training flight for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)<\/strong>, the foreign intelligence service of the United States. USA. Today the remains of the plane are still there.
