But instead of the restoration of a free and democratic Poland, <strong>the Poles went from being under an occupying dictatorship (that of the Germany) to be under another (Soviet Russia)<\/strong>. Stalin imposed a communist dictatorship in Poland, against the will of the Poles, and <strong>democracy would not return to that country until after the fall of communism in 1989.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53041374157_0d3bdc1da2_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The crosses commemorating those who disappeared from the August\u00f3w Raid in the town of Giby, in north-eastern Poland (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvp.info\/43597645\/rocznica-malego-katynia-w-gibach-uczczono-ofiary-oblawy-augustowskiej\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PAP\/Artur Reszko<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p>Of all the countries occupied by Nazi Germany, <strong>Poland had the most active resistance<\/strong>, created before the Germans and Soviets managed to complete the occupation of the country. <strong>The vast majority of this resistance was loyal to the Polish government in exile<\/strong>, which had its headquarters in London. Only a minority part of the Polish resistance was communist and loyal to Moscow. When the Soviets seized Poland at the end of the war, <strong>Stalin wanted to eliminate what was left of the Polish resistance <\/strong> in order to liquidate all opposition to his plans to make Poland a satellite state of the USSR.<\/p>\n<p><big>The situation of the Polish resistance at the end of the war<\/big><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2017\/02\/14\/armia-krajowa-75-years-ago-was-founded-the-largest-resistance-movement-of-the-ww2\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Armia Krajowa (Home Army)<\/a>, loyal to the Polish government-in-exile and the largest resistance organization of World War II, <strong>had dissolved in January 1945<\/strong>, in part to avoid a confrontation with the Soviets that would plunge an already-ruined country into civil war. <strong>Nevertheless, some of its units remained active<\/strong> to face the repression that the Soviets and their Polish communist puppets unleashed on Poland. <strong>Many AK members joined the Wolno\u015b\u0107 i Niezawis\u0142o\u015b\u0107 (WiN, Freedom and Independence) movement<\/strong>, in order to continue the fight against communism. Another of the great organizations of the Polish resistance, <strong>the Narodowe Si\u0142y Zbrojne (NSZ, National Armed Forces)<\/strong>, which had fought simultaneously against the Nazis and the Soviets, <strong>continued their fight until 1947.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53041374142_8601dd1070_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The tribute to those who disappeared from the August\u00f3w Raid in 2015 in Giby (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/bialystok.ipn.gov.pl\/pl1\/aktualnosci\/17776,Obchody-70-rocznicy-Oblawy-Augustowskiej-Augustow-Giby-1819-lipca-2015.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instytut Pami\u0119ci Narodowej<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><big>The July 1945 August\u00f3w Raid against the Polish resistance<\/big><\/p>\n<p>Stalin's political police, <strong>the NKVD (the Soviet version of the Gestapo), went to great lengths to liquidate the Polish resistance<\/strong>. It must be remembered that in 1940, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2018\/04\/12\/katyn-75-years-of-lies-and-communist-denial-of-the-massacre-of-22000-poles\/\">the NKVD had been the executor of the Katyn massacre<\/a>, in which 22,000 Polish officers who had been taken prisoner by the Soviets were murdered. Also, <a href=\"https:\/\/ipn.gov.pl\/en\/digital-resources\/articles\/7538,Augustow-Round-up-a-crime-without-expiration.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on July 12, 1945, the Red Army deployed 45,000 soldiers in the August\u00f3w Forest<\/a>. In that area, and with the help of Polish communists, <strong>the Soviets managed to liquidate an AK unit that numbered 170 soldiers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><big>Some 7,000 people were detained: 562 never returned<\/big><\/p>\n<p>During this operation, known to Polish historians as the August\u00f3w Raid, \"Little Katyn\" or \"Second Katyn\", <a href=\"http:\/\/archiwum.thenews.pl\/1\/9\/Artykul\/96780\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">approximately 7,000 people were arrested<\/a>. Some of them did not return to their homes until 11 years later, after a harsh captivity. Reszko<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><big>The null collaboration of Russia and Belarus in the investigation of the massacre<\/big><\/p>\n<p>Unlike other massacres, <strong>that secret is maintained today, largely due to the null collaboration of the Russian and Belarusian authorities,<\/strong> who responded with silence to the requests of the Institute of National Remembrance of Poland (IPN) during its investigation into what happened in that massacre. <strong>The lack of data on the massacre led the IPN even to investigate the archives of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA)<\/strong>, in case that nationalist organization had any relationship with the events, but without any success.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <strong>in May 2011 a Russian historian, Nikita Petrov<\/strong>, vice-president of the NGO Memorial (which investigates the crimes of communism and whose activity in Russia was outlawed by Putin), <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110727173215\/http:\/\/wyborcza.pl\/1,76842,9656889,IPN_zainteresowane_rosyjska_ksiazka_o_oblawie_augustowskiej.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">found a document in the KGB archives that proves that the massacre took place and that it was planned and carried out by the NKVD<\/a>, <strong>in accordance with Stalin's wishes.<\/strong> This is a source that had been inaccessible to Polish IPN investigators for years . <a href=\"http:\/\/archiwum.thenews.pl\/1\/9\/Artykul\/96780\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In April 2012, new documents obtained by the IPN confirmed the massacre.<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53042144589_5782113f2f_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">Polish scouts holding the photos of those missing in the August\u00f3w Raid during the tribute ceremony held in 2021 (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prezydent.pl\/kancelaria\/aktywnosc-ministrow\/obchody-dnia-pamieci-ofiar-oblawy-augustowskiej-w-gibach,12052\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oficjalna strona Prezydenta Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><big>The symbolic grave of Giby that remembers the missing of August\u00f3w<\/big><\/p>\n<p>Today, the relatives of those killed in August\u00f3w do not have a grave in which to visit their loved ones.
