{"id":54068,"date":"2023-11-30T23:12:48","date_gmt":"2023-11-30T22:12:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=54068"},"modified":"2024-11-30T00:25:40","modified_gmt":"2024-11-29T23:25:40","slug":"the-gordejuela-water-elevator-one-of-the-most-beautiful-ruined-buildings-in-spain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/11\/30\/the-gordejuela-water-elevator-one-of-the-most-beautiful-ruined-buildings-in-spain\/","title":{"rendered":"The Gordejuela Water Elevator, one of the most beautiful ruined buildings in Spain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In many places in Spain there are ruined buildings of great beauty, but not many are located in a place as unique as this one.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/11\/12\/a-tour-of-little-known-places-in-tenerife-with-the-patrulla-aguila-as-a-guest\/\">A tour of little-known places in Tenerife, with the Patrulla \u00c1guila as a guest<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/08\/19\/the-old-defenses-of-fuerteventura-the-batteries-of-corralejo-and-matas-blancas\/\">The old defenses of Fuerteventura: the batteries of Corralejo and Matas Blancas<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 1903, the British company Hamilton House acquired the water company of Juan de Gordejuela<\/strong>, owner of a mill located next to a waterfall on a spectacular cliff on the north coast of the island of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, specifically in the Los Realejos area. <strong>On the site of the old mill, a building with a water elevator was built<\/strong>, in order to take water from some springs to the top of the cliff, about 200 meters above sea level.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53366213282_87f09aeff2_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The ruins of the Water Elevator, seen from the Gordejuela viewpoint (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Casa_Hamilton_%22El_Elevador_de_Aguas_de_Gordejuela%22_03.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">teneriffaurlaub.es<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>The first steam engine on the island of Tenerife was installed in this building.<\/strong> According to <a href=\"https:\/\/listaroja.hispanianostra.org\/ficha\/elevador-aguas-gordejuela\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hispanianostra.org<\/a>, the water lift installation was designed by the military engineer Jos\u00e9 Galv\u00e1n Balaguer, born in Seville, with the collaboration of Le\u00f3n de Torres and Le\u00f3n Huerta. <strong>The water pumped from the cliff was used to irrigate a banana plantation<\/strong> in the Orotava valley.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53366213267_0ce3383b86_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The Water Elevator in a photo taken in 2007, 104 years after its construction (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/maduroman\/1782773199\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carlos SM<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p>Despite being an advanced facility for its time and much needed for the island, <strong>the company went into losses and the facility was leased in 1910 to another British company, Elder & Fyffes, and sold in 1919<\/strong>.
