{"id":54397,"date":"2023-12-30T23:37:55","date_gmt":"2023-12-30T22:37:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=54397"},"modified":"2025-12-30T01:52:06","modified_gmt":"2025-12-30T00:52:06","slug":"the-two-munaiz-arguelles-cannons-of-the-battery-j-3-of-monteferro-in-the-vigo-estuary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/12\/30\/the-two-munaiz-arguelles-cannons-of-the-battery-j-3-of-monteferro-in-the-vigo-estuary\/","title":{"rendered":"The two Mun\u00e1iz-Arg\u00fcelles cannons of the Battery J-3 of Monteferro, in the Vigo Estuary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During the Spanish Civil War, the region of Galicia, controlled by the national side, had two of the best defended coasts in the world.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/10\/28\/varnes-fort-world-war-ii-german-cannons-hidden-in-a-cliff-in-norway\/\">Varnes Fort, World War II German cannons hidden in a cliff in Norway<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"\">Bangsbo Fort, a German World War II battery in Denmark that is now a museum<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><strong>The first of these stretches of coast was the \u00c1rtabro Gulf<\/strong>, which covers the Ferrol, Betanzos and Burgo estuaries, due to the naval base of the Spanish Navy in Ferrol and the important port of La Coru\u00f1a. <strong>The second section was in the R\u00edas Bajas, with six batteries:<\/strong> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2016\/07\/21\/la-bateria-j-1-de-puerto-cuaces-el-grove-la-ultima-del-ejercito-de-tierra-en-las-rias-bajas\/\">J-1 Puerto Cuaces<\/a> and the <a href=\" https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2010\/07\/25\/la-bateria-j-2-de-cabo-udra\/\">J-2 Cabo Udra<\/a>, both guarding the exit of the Pontevedra estuary, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2008\/05\/05\/artilleria-de-costa-en-ruinas\/\">J-3 de Monteferro<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2015\/11\/04\/la-bateria-j-4-de-cabo-silleiro-un-lento-camino-hacia-la-destruccion-y-el-olvido\/\">J-4 of Cabo Silleiro Alto<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/manuelc2005.blogspot.com\/2010\/04\/12145-bateria-costera-j-5-silleiro-bajo.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">J-5 by Silleiro Bajo<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/manuelc2005.blogspot.com\/2010\/06\/bateria-costera-j-6-la-guia-vigo.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">J-6 de La Gu\u00eda<\/a>, guarding the Vigo Estuary, since <strong>the city of Vigo had one of the most important ports on the national side<\/strong>, a great arrival point for weapons and supplies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/tag\/bateria-j-3-de-monteferro\/\">I have already spoken a few times here about the J-3 Battery of Monteferro.<\/a> <strong>This battery was installed in 1936, at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War<\/strong>, on the Monteferro peninsula, located in the southern bank of the R\u00eda de Vigo and in the municipality of Nigr\u00e1n (Pontevedra). <strong>It was equipped with three Mun\u00e1iz-Arg\u00fcelles 150\/45 Model 1903 rapid-fire cannons<\/strong>, pieces with a range of 13 km that were brought from Ferrol. <strong>The battery was active until the 1960s<\/strong>, when it went into reserve, but remained as a military installation until May 4, 1989, when it was abandoned and the Ministry of Defense gave the land to the mountain community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The battery preserves two of its three original cannons.<\/strong> The third cannon was donated by the Army to the Cotobade City Council, where it was displayed until 2004, being later sent to a municipal plot, from where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2015\/03\/16\/video-la-brilat-recupera-en-cotobade-un-canon-de-mas-de-100-anos-y-13-toneladas\/\">It was recovered by the Brigade \"Galicia\" VII (BRILAT) in 2015<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/metropolitano.gal\/enfoque\/nigran-restaura-los-canones-de-monteferro-y-revaloriza-la-bateria-militar\/\">the Nigr\u00e1n City Council carried out carried out a restoration process of these cannons<\/a>, with funds from the Provincial Council of Pontevedra. <strong>The two surviving cannons (pieces 1 and 3 of the old battery) have been painted naval gray<\/strong>, as you can see in this video:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nigr\u00e1n: la Bater\u00eda J-3 de Monteferro\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EpMp1sTMXkA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Between 2016 and 2017, the cannons were vandalized with graffiti<\/strong>, in the midst of a total abandonment of this battery.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4217\/35415178146_d09ca40813_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4212\/35415177936_f8386df6e7_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2017\/06\/22\/el-nuevo-aspecto-del-canon-munaiz-arguelles-no32-de-la-antigua-bateria-j-3-de-monteferro\/\">In June 2017, the urban explorer Manuel Calavera restored one of the cannons<\/a>, No. 32, which occupies well number 1 of the battery, the northernmost. He drew a characteristic shark mouth that looked very good.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4242\/35324783511_7abff98158_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>over the years this canyon became degraded again<\/strong>.
