{"id":54709,"date":"2024-02-01T23:10:10","date_gmt":"2024-02-01T22:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=54709"},"modified":"2025-02-01T00:03:31","modified_gmt":"2025-01-31T23:03:31","slug":"the-past-and-sad-present-of-the-b-5-pena-roiba-battery-in-the-rias-altas-of-galicia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/02\/01\/the-past-and-sad-present-of-the-b-5-pena-roiba-battery-in-the-rias-altas-of-galicia\/","title":{"rendered":"The past and sad present of the B-5 Pe\u00f1a Roiba Battery, in the R\u00edas Altas of Galicia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), the region of Galicia had some of the best defended coasts in the world.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/12\/30\/the-two-munaiz-arguelles-cannons-of-the-battery-j-3-of-monteferro-in-the-vigo-estuary\/\">The two Mun\u00e1iz-Arg\u00fcelles cannons of the Battery J-3 of Monteferro, in the Vigo Estuary<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/11\/13\/prior-norte-searchlights-the-eyes-of-the-coastal-artillery-of-the-rias-altas-of-galicia\/\">Prior Norte searchlights: the eyes of the coastal artillery of the R\u00edas Altas of Galicia<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><strong>Within Galicia, the best defended part was the \u00c1rtabro Gulf<\/strong>, which includes the Ferrol, Betanzos and Burgo estuaries. The importance of this area is due to <strong>the naval base of the Spanish Navy in Ferrol<\/strong> and the important commercial port of the city of La Coru\u00f1a. <strong>Cape Prior, north of Ferrol, was the best defended area of the province of La Coru\u00f1a, with five batteries:<\/strong> Battery B-2 Prior Nortew, Battery B-3 Prior Sur, Battery B-5 Pe\u00f1a Roiba and th Battery e B-6 Monte Prior, in addition to two groups of projectors: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/11\/13\/prior-norte-searchlights-the-eyes-of-the-coastal-artillery-of-the-rias-altas-of-galicia\/\">Prior Norte, which we saw here<\/a>, and Prior Sur.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Battery B-5 Pe\u00f1a Roiba (initially called 5th Battery) was a fire support position<\/strong> for batteries with larger guns. It was one of the batteries built as a consequence of the coastal defense plan of 1926, during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera. <strong>The B-5 was equipped with four Vickers model 1923 15'24 cm cannons, divided into two sections of two pieces each<\/strong>, at different levels. The cannons were installed there in 1929.
