This Thursday, March 7, 2024, NATO has finally incorporated Sweden, which thus becomes the 32nd country that makes up the Alliance.<\/p>\n

\nSweden and the USA are preparing to defend a strategic island that is coveted by Russia<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n

Yesterday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said<\/a>: \"This is a historic day. Sweden will now take its rightful place at NATO\u2019s table, with an equal say in shaping NATO policies and decisions. After over 200 years of non-alignment Sweden now enjoys the protection granted under Article 5<\/strong>, the ultimate guarantee of Allies\u2019 freedom and security. Sweden brings with it capable armed forces and a first-class defence industry.<\/strong> Sweden\u2019s accession makes NATO stronger, Sweden safer and the whole Alliance more secure. Today\u2019s accession demonstrates that NATO\u2019s door remains open and that every nation has the right to choose its own path.\"<\/em><\/p>\n

The accession of Sweden, like that of Finland, was caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On February 25, 2022, the day after the start of the invasion, Putin threatened Finland and Sweden with \"serious military consequences\" if they joined NATO<\/a>. A few days later, demonstrating that this threat was serious, Russian planes made an incursion into Swedish airspace carrying nuclear weapons<\/a>. These threats had the exact opposite effect of what the Russian dictator was looking for: Finland and Sweden quickly understood the need to seek protection in the Atlantic Alliance.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sweden is a parliamentary Monarchy that has been part of the European Union since 1995<\/strong>, although it continues to use its own currency, the Swedish crown. According to Swedish Central Statistics Office<\/a>, today this country has 10,550,054 inhabitants<\/strong>. At the end of 2022 there would be 865,256 foreigners<\/a> residing in the country. The largest group of foreigners are Poles, with 56,165 residents<\/a>, followed by Syrians (53,698), Afghans (45,053), Finns (40,227) and Hindus (36,342).<\/p>\n

Like Finland,Sweden is a country that has a great defense culture.<\/strong> For years it has developed a very good military industry of its own, with the best-known exponents being Svenska Aeroplan AB (SAAB). )<\/strong>, with regard to aviation, Saab Kockums<\/strong> (ships) and two companies that today are part of BAE Systems: H\u00e4gglunds<\/strong> (creator of the excellent vehicle CV90 infantry combat system) and Bofors<\/strong> (specialized in artillery) with regard to ground systems.<\/p>\n

In 2010 Sweden abandoned compulsory military service, but regained it in 2017<\/strong>, due to a lack of recruits. Currently, both men and women are called to perform this obligatory service. According to Globalfirepower.com<\/a>, Sweden is ranked 29th in the military ranking world (Spain is in 20th). The Swedish Armed Forces are divided into four branches of service:<\/strong> Army (Armen), Navy (Marinen), Air Force (Flygvapnet) and Home Guard (Hemv\u00e4rnet). The active personnel of the Armed Forces is 25,600 people<\/a> (including 10,200 civilians), with 76% men and 24% women, and 22,200 members of the National Guard. The country has about 5.7 million men and women of military age<\/strong> (18 to 47 years old).<\/p>\n

  • 150 BvS 10 MkII<\/strong> armored personnel carriers (with rubber tracks or amphibious capability).<\/li>\n
  • 315 ACMAT Bastion armored transports<\/strong> on wheels.<\/li>\n
  • 34 Patgb 180 wheeled armored transports<\/strong> (local designation of the Finnish Sisu XA-180).<\/li>\n

    Navy<\/big2><\/p>\n

    It has an active staff of 2,350 men and women.<\/strong> It is a brown water navy, that is, focused on the defense of the coastline. It has the following naval units:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • 1 ocean patrol vessel, the HSwMS Carlskrona<\/strong>, 105.7 meters in length. She has been in service since 1982. She is the largest ship in the Swedish Navy.<\/li>\n
    • 3 Gotland class submarines<\/strong>, with a length of 60.4 meters. All three entered service in 1996.<\/li>\n
    • 2 S\u00f6dermanland class submarines<\/strong>, with a length of 60.5 meters. Both entered service in 1989.<\/li>\n
    • 5 Visby class corvettes<\/strong>, with a length of 72.7 meters. They are very modern ships. They entered service between 2002 and 2015.<\/li>\n
    • 2 G\u00f6teborg class corvettes<\/strong>, with a length of 57 meters. They entered service in 1990 and 1993.<\/li>\n
    • 5 Koster class minesweepers<\/strong>, with a length of 47.5 meters. They entered service between 1986 and 1992. Two other vessels of this type are retired and stored.<\/li>\n
    • 2 minesweepers of the Styrs\u00f6<\/strong>class, with a length of 36 meters. They were launched between 1996 and 1997. Today they are used for auxiliary tasks.<\/li>\n
    • 2 Stockholm class patrol boats<\/strong>, with a length of 50 meters. They originally entered service as corvettes in 1986.<\/li>\n
    • 11 Tapper class patrol boats<\/strong>, 23 meters in length. They entered service between 1993 and 1999.<\/li>\n
    • 165 Stridsb\u00e5t 90<\/strong> fast combat boats, 15.9 meters long. Very good vessels for coastal surveillance and with the capacity to carry out assault and infiltration missions.<\/li>\n
    • 2 Ledningsb\u00e5t 2000 combat boats<\/strong>, for amphibious operations.<\/li>\n
    • 100 Marine Alutech Watercat M8 landing craft<\/strong>, known as G class<\/strong>, 8.2 meters in length.<\/li>\n
    • 8 rapid supply barges of the Trossb\u00e5t class<\/strong>, 21 meters in length.<\/li>\n
    • 3 Griffon Hoverwork 2000TD hovercrafts<\/strong>, 11.7 meters in length.<\/li>\n
    • 2 intelligence ships<\/strong>, the HSwMS Orion (from 1984) and the HSwMS Artemis (active since 2023).<\/li>\n
    • 1 command ship<\/strong>, the HSwMS Tross\u00f6, 71.6 meters long, launched in 1984 and active in the Swedish Navy since 1998.<\/li>\n
    • 1 submarine rescue ship<\/strong>, the HSwMS Belos.<\/li>\n
    • 1 underwater research vessel<\/strong>, the HSwMS Furusund.<\/li>\n
    • 2 sailing training ships<\/strong>, the HSwMS Gladan (S01) and the HSwMS Falken (S02).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
