That said, although it is not necessary to be Catholic to defend life, what should be very clear is that being Catholic is incompatible with defending abortion. Catholic doctrine is very clear in its condemnation of the murder of unborn children, one of the most cowardly crimes (no matter how much some disguise it with words like "right" or "choice"), since its victims are the members weakest and most defenseless of the human species.

The incoherence of 'Catholic' politicians who promote abortion

I have said that this should be clear, because it often seems that it is not. In some countries there is the paradox of politicians who define themselves as "Catholics" at the same time they defend abortion, an exhibition of inconsistency comparable to that of a Catholic who defends communism, Nazism , rape or trafficking in human beings.

Not only is it aberrant to declare oneself Catholic and defend this crime against the weakest, but also those pro-abortion politicians who pose as Catholics contribute to deceiving many people with their position, transmitting the erroneous idea that You can be Catholic and defend that atrocity. Furthermore, those politicians cause a scandal among Catholics that is more serious when they are better known.

The case of Joe Biden and the position of the US Catholic bishops

In this sense, the clearest case is, without a doubt, that of the president of the United States: Joe Biden claims to be Catholic and is an active defender of that crime, a position for which he has received criticisms from the US Episcopal Conference. Last year, a Texas bishop described Biden's Catholicism as "fake". In the US, some bishops have already demanded Biden's excommunication.

Pope Francis rejected the excommunication of pro-abortion politicians

In 2021, Pope Francis opposed this measure, stating that pastors who ask for this excommunication are getting into "political problems." The question is: Should the Church refrain from acting when a politician who calls himself Catholic approves seriously anti-Christian theses such as abortion? Is it possible to frame these theses, perhaps, in fewer "political problems" that the Church should not interfere, even when that atrocity is promoted by someone who calls himself Catholic?

Cardinal Müller says they should be “excommunicated”

A few days ago, the pro-life website LifeSiteNews published an interview with Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller, who was prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith between 2012 and 2017, is That is to say, a very authoritative voice to point out what the Church must do when it comes to ensuring its doctrine. Müller condemned Biden's position on abortion and pointed out that those who promote it should be excommunicated. Regarding the US president, the Cardinal stated that Biden is "nominally a Catholic, in reality he is a Nihilist. It’s cynicism and absolute cynicism."

Cardinal Müller added: "it’s absolutely unacceptable that you can say you are a Catholic and promote and justify killing of human persons, human beings." He also said the following: "The word ‘abortion’ is too much a soft word. The reality is killing, murder of a living person" Müller noted, adding: "There’s no right to kill another person. It’s absolutely against the Fifth Commandment."

A problem that affects the position of the Church regarding abortion

Of course, I applaud the words of Cardinal Müller, who has perfectly defined Biden's attitude towards abortion. Of course: the problem is not just Biden. As I have already said, there are more politicians who define themselves as "Catholic" in the US and other countries and who actively support abortion. It is incomprehensible that the Church tolerates these attitudes, since it conveys the idea that this issue is not so important, that it is okay to define yourself as Catholic and defend abortion, because despite this you will be able to continue taking communion. .

What's more: by tolerating this serious incoherence, the messages that the Church may send about abortion are called into question. In 2021, when Pope Francis opposed excommunicating pro-abortion politicians, he said it after stating that "abortion is homicide". That same year, Francis compared induced abortion to "hiring a hitman", since it consists of "killing a human life to solve a problem." But how can we affirm the seriousness of this monstrosity if at the same time the Church allows those who publicly promote it to take communion?

---

Photo: Ronen Tivony/SOPA Images.
