{"id":55551,"date":"2024-04-19T19:48:02","date_gmt":"2024-04-19T17:48:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=55551"},"modified":"2025-04-19T00:48:18","modified_gmt":"2025-04-18T22:48:18","slug":"spain-will-modernize-its-fleet-of-firefighting-seaplanes-and-buy-seven-new-dhc-515s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/04\/19\/spain-will-modernize-its-fleet-of-firefighting-seaplanes-and-buy-seven-new-dhc-515s\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain will modernize its fleet of firefighting seaplanes and buy seven new DHC-515s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 43rd Group of the Spanish Air Force will see its fleet of firefighting seaplanes renewed with the acquisition of a new model.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/12\/10\/the-airplanes-and-helicopters-that-the-spanish-air-force-expects-to-receive-soon\/\">The airplanes and helicopters that the Spanish Air Force expects to receive soon<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/04\/06\/sirtap-the-unmanned-aircraft-developed-by-spain-and-colombia-for-military-purposes\/\">SIRTAP, the unmanned aircraft developed by Spain and Colombia for military purposes<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><big>The current fleet of the 43 Group and its modernization<\/big><\/p>\n<p>This Friday, the Ministry of Defense of Spain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensa.gob.es\/gabinete\/notasPrensa\/2024\/04\/DGC-240419-acuerdo-aviones-anfibios.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has announced<\/a> the signing of an agreement to <strong>modernize a total of 14 firefighting aircraft operated by the 43rd Group<\/strong> of the Air Force, based in Torrej\u00f3n de Ardoz ( Madrid). The current fleet is divided this way:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>10 Canadair CL-215T<\/strong> that are owned by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and operated and maintained by the Air Force. Their license plates are UD.13-20, UD.13-21. UD.13-22, UD.13-23, UD.13-24, UD.13-25, UD.13-26, UD.13-27, UD.13-28 and UD.13-30.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A Bombardier CL-415 that is owned by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition<\/strong> and that is operated and maintained by the Air Force, the UD.14-04-34, which arrived in Spain in 2013.<\/li>\n<li><strong>3 Bombardier CL-415 that are owned by the Ministry of Defense<\/strong> and that are operated and maintained by the Air Force. These aircraft are the UD.13-20 (arrived in Spain on August 24, 1987), the UD.13-21 (built in 1989), and the UD.13-23, UD.13-24, UD.13 -25, UD.13-26, UD.13-27, UD.13-28, UD.13-29 and UD.13-30 (built in 1990).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The modernization of the CL-215T and CL-415 in service in Spain will be financed by the European Union<\/strong>, as they are integrated into the European Civil Protection Mechanism, as reported by the Ministry of Defense.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3472\/3737810536_73ae6f53fd_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The CL-215T UD.13-26 (43-26) of the 43rd Group of the Spanish Air Force doing a demonstration water launch on Samil beach, in Vigo, in July 2009 (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/elentir\/3737810536\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elentir<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><big>The purchase of seven new De Havilland Canada DHC-515 Firefighter<\/big><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the modernization of the CL-215T and CL-415, the big news announced today is <strong>the purchase by Spain of seven new De Havilland Canada DHC-515 Firefighter<\/strong> floatplanes. This purchase will be coordinated by the European Commission and will be made jointly with four other CL-415 operating countries (Croatia, France, Greece and Italy) in addition to <strong>Portugal<\/strong>, whose Air Force will receive its first firefighting seaplanes. <strong>The six countries plan to buy a total of 20 DHC-515<\/strong>, so Spain could be one of the largest operators of this new aircraft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The DHC-515 is basically an improved CL-415<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/dehavilland.com\/en\/news\/posts\/de-havilland-aircraft-of-canada-limited-launches-dhc-515-firefighter\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">It was announced by De Havilland Canada two years ago<\/a>, in order to provide a more modern aircraft to CL-215T and CL-415 operators. <em>\"<strong>Important upgrades are being made that will increase the functionality and effectiveness<\/strong> of this legendarily rugged firefighting aircraft,\"<\/em> the Canadian company then announced, noting that it already had letters of intention for the purchase of 22 aircraft by European customers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53663719962_bcc32043bb_h.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The new De Havilland Canada DHC-515 Firefighter (Image: <a href=\"https:\/\/dehavilland.com\/en\/news\/posts\/de-havilland-aircraft-of-canada-limited-launches-dhc-515-firefighter\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">De Havilland Canada<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p>The company that originally manufactured the CL-215 and CL-215T, <strong>Canadair, was acquired by Bombardier in 1986<\/strong>, which is why the CL-415 was marketed under the name of the new owner, despite that genetically these planes are still popularly known as Canadair (in Spain they are nicknamed \"Botijo\").<\/p>\n<p><strong>The CL-415 program was acquired by the Canadian company Viking Air in 2016.<\/strong> Viking Air, based in North Saanich (British Columbia), specializes in improved versions of some De Havilland Canada aircraft and in manufacture spare parts for older aircraft of that brand. <strong>De Havilland Canada has been trying to relaunch production of the CL-415 since 2019<\/strong>, and it will be at its Calgary (Alberta) factory where the new DHC-515s will be built.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53664610031_34431d64ff_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">A seaplane under construction at the De Havilland Canada factory in Calgary (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/dehavilland.com\/en\/news\/posts\/de-havilland-aircraft-of-canada-limited-launches-dhc-515-firefighter\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">De Havilland Canada<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p>Viking Air <a href=\"https:\/\/aerialfirefighter.vikingair.com\/aircraft\/dhc-515-firefighter\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">notes<\/a> that <strong>the DHC-515 incorporates new technology and materials that expand its operational scope<\/strong>, with <em>\"a state-of-the-art avionics suite and the availability of a factory endorsed Full Motion Level D Flight Simulator,\"<\/em>, which become <em>\"<strong>the most technically advanced multi-mission aerial firefighting aircraft on the market<\/strong>.\"<\/em> In addition to its firefighting mission, the DHC-515 can be equipped with more options, such as \"spray boom for <strong>insect control or oil spill dispersant<\/strong>, an enlarged cargo door for disaster relief support, and the ability to add a \u201cQC\u201d quick change sensor or <strong>medevac suite<\/strong>.\"<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>You can see here <strong>the presentation video of the DHC-515 published by De Havilland Canada a year ago:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"DHC-515 FIREFIGHTER\u2122\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5TfMvJr1qcQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>---<\/p>\n<p><small>Main photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/elentir\/3737797464\/\">Elentir<\/a>.
