{"id":55626,"date":"2024-04-24T23:41:06","date_gmt":"2024-04-24T21:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=55626"},"modified":"2024-04-30T22:00:31","modified_gmt":"2024-04-30T20:00:31","slug":"the-ruins-of-the-old-yugoslav-radar-station-at-gola-pljesevica-croatia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/04\/24\/the-ruins-of-the-old-yugoslav-radar-station-at-gola-pljesevica-croatia\/","title":{"rendered":"The ruins of the old Yugoslav radar station at Gola Plje\u0161evica, Croatia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After World War II, the communists established a dictatorship on the territory of the former Kingdom of Yugoslavia.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/05\/05\/crc-glons-exploring-a-nato-radar-station-that-was-abandoned-in-2021\/\">CRC Glons: exploring a NATO radar station that was abandoned in 2021<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/10\/15\/a-remote-old-military-base-in-the-northernmost-and-windiest-location-in-the-united-kingdom\/\">A remote old military base in the northernmost and windiest location in the United Kingdom<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><strong>That dictatorship, headed by Josip Broz Tito, distanced itself from the Soviet bloc directed from Moscow<\/strong>, adopting a very peculiar foreign policy, which did not avoid contacts with Western countries. <strong>In defense policy, the curious situation in Yugoslavia forced it to monitor two fronts:<\/strong> that of NATO and that of the communist dictatorships grouped in the Warsaw Pact (PACVAR). This explains, in a way, <strong>the point chosen for the installation of one of its air defense radars.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That point was <strong>Gola Plje\u0161evica, a mountain 1,648 meters above sea level<\/strong>, located right on the border between Croatia and Bosnia. The radar installed on its top, a British Marconi S-600, had a range of 400 km and could monitor possible incursions from Italy (a NATO member), Hungary ( member of PACVAR) and <strong>Austria<\/strong> (a neutral country).<\/p>\n<p>During the Croatian war of independence, <strong>the summit of Gola Plje\u0161evica was in the hands of the Serbian military<\/strong> (who destroyed much of the place before abandoning it) until it was liberated by the Croats in 1995. Subsequently, <strong >This facility was used as a communications center by the NATO Implementation Force (IFOR)<\/strong> between 1995 and 2004, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeljava-lybi.com\/Zeljava-RP%20Pljesevica_eng.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">zeljava-lybi.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@croinfiltration\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Croatia Infiltration<\/a> <strong>published an interesting video exploring these ruins<\/strong>, including the underground parts of this former military installation.
