For these people, if a dictator does not have all those characteristics, then he is not a dictator. Thus, the left does not believe that a dictator is a dictator if he is a socialist or communist, as has been happening in the cases of Fidel Castro, Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro. For the left, a dictatorship can only be a dictatorship if it is fascist or right-wing. It is a sectarian and false vision of reality that only seeks to whitewash dictatorships related to the left.

The Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) gives a good definition of a dictator: "In modern times, a person who assumes or receives all political powers and, supported by force, exercises them without legal limitation."

What the left means when it talks about 'democratizing'

According to that correct definition, a dictator can be one regardless of his ideology. It is enough that it meets the terms set forth in that definition. The problem, of course, is that the left has an ideological propensity to concentrate all possible power, as a consequence of a conception of society according to which the State should have great weight in society, especially in the economy. When the left talks about "democratizing" something, what they intend is to subject it to political power, with the excuse that it has been chosen through democratic elections, suggesting the idea that everything that is not subject That power is not democratic.

Clue number 1: the attempt to control Justice

However, a democracy is not because everything is controlled by political power. There can be no democracy without separation of powers, which implies an independent Justice. This requirement is reflected in Article 10 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, in the determination of his rights and obligations and of any criminal charge against him.

Independent and impartial courts cannot exist where judges are chosen by politicians. In fact, the intervention of politicians in the election of judges, as happens in Spain, is a threat to democracy itself, since one of the functions of judges is to serve as a dam against abuses of political power. A function that Justice cannot exercise with independence and impartiality if the appointments of judges depend on political power itself.

Clue number 2: the attempt to control the media

The same goes for the media. One of the functions of journalism is to supervise the actions of those in power and denounce their abuses. This is why journalism is commonly described as the "fourth estate" in democratic countries. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights protects this right in its Article 19:

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

When political power attempts to limit these rights, what it is doing is degrading and eroding democracy, no matter how many flourishes it attempts to disguise that fact.

The dictatorial aspiration to govern without any limitations

That said, when a politician tries to take control of Justice and the media, what we have is not a well-intentioned ruler who only wants to prevent judges and journalists from doing their job wrong. job - to punish the abuses of judges and journalists there is already Justice in democratic countries - but an aspiring dictator who wants to govern without limits other than his desires and his will. A politician like this is a threat to democracy.

In the current public debate there are many statements about what a dictatorship is, but some people do not seem to have it very clear.

[19536,10863

post-55686","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-we-said-yesterday","category-reflexions
["GET
