{"id":55791,"date":"2024-05-09T23:23:52","date_gmt":"2024-05-09T21:23:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=55791"},"modified":"2024-05-11T23:28:07","modified_gmt":"2024-05-11T21:28:07","slug":"double-negative-a-curious-work-of-art-in-a-remote-canyon-in-northeastern-nevada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/05\/09\/double-negative-a-curious-work-of-art-in-a-remote-canyon-in-northeastern-nevada\/","title":{"rendered":"Double Negative, a curious work of art in a remote canyon in northeastern Nevada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With this article I risk generating very conflicting opinions, but I think it is healthy to generate a little debate on some topics.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/03\/13\/the-milford-sound-fjord-the-eighth-wonder-of-the-world-on-new-zealands-south-island\/\">The Milford Sound fjord, the 'eighth wonder of the world' on New Zealand's South Island<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/08\/28\/a-tour-of-the-incredible-son-doong-grotto-the-largest-cavern-in-the-world\/\">A tour of the incredible Son Doong Grotto, the largest cavern in the world<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p>This Wednesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@SidetrackAdventures\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sidetrack Adventures<\/a> <strong>published an interesting video recorded near Moapa Valley, in northeastern Nevada<\/strong> (United States), to a very arid area located about 65 kilometers northeast of the city of Las Vegas. <strong>The video is titled \"Is This Art?\"<\/strong>, and its author poses that question in relation to a curious work of art titled \"Double Negative\" and created by sculptor Michael Heizer between 1969 and 1970:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Is This Art? - Visiting Double Negative in the Nevada Desert\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8G9rqjQtZwg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>If anyone expected something similar to Mount Rushmore, they will surely have been greatly disappointed<\/strong>, unless we are talking about a fan of the very diffuse world that is contemporary art. <strong>The work of art in question is this:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53709316852_5cc8b38e13_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I copy <a href=\"https:\/\/doublenegative.tarasen.net\/double-negative\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the explanation given by the Heizer website<\/a>: <em>\"Double Negative is Michael Heizer's first prominent earthwork. <strong>It consists of two trenches cut into the eastern edge of the Mormon Mesa<\/strong>, northwest of Overton, Nevada in 1969-70.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53709316827_6664d95b0f_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>These two trenches, made on both sides of a natural canyon, measure 457 meters long<\/strong>, 15.2 meters deep and 9.1 meters wide. 240,000 tons of rock were moved to dig it. The author's website adds: <em>\"<strong>Double Negative, though a notable piece of art, is essentially no more than a big trench<\/strong> (and even then, not a complete trench, as it crosses empty space).\"<\/em> Honestly, <strong>I have seen \"works of art\" like this many times done in various public works<\/strong>. In my country we call them \"ditches\".<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53710559359_debcd17a1d_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>If we have to choose between works of art, I choose the landscape of this place<\/strong> that shows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@SidetrackAdventures\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sidetrack Adventures<\/a> in his video.
