This unit is the \"Top Gun\" of naval helicopter pilots. It is based at NAS Fallon, Nevada, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2020\/07\/08\/these-are-the-authentic-top-gun-the-elite-of-the-us-navy-fighter-aviators\/\">the same naval air station where the current Top Gun is located<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53730442935_53b71c2f4e_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">A UH-1E HAL-3 helicopter flying over a column of U.S. Navy PBR boats in the Mekong Delta, South Vietnam, in April 1968 (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.navy.mil\/content\/history\/museums\/hrnm\/explore\/VietnamExhibitPage\/AirPowerReloadV1\/TheSeawolvesV2Reload.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Naval History and Heritage Command<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>Seawolf has its origins in the Vietnam War.<\/strong> On April 1, 1967, the US Navy formed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.navy.mil\/content\/history\/museums\/hrnm\/explore\/VietnamExhibitPage\/AirPowerReloadV1\/TheSeawolvesV2Reload.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Helicopter Attack Squadron (Light) 3 \"Seawolves\" (HAL-3)<\/a>, a unit made up of helicopters UH-1E Huey dedicated to <strong>special operations missions in support of Navy riverboat forces<\/strong> in the Mekong River Delta. The HAL-3 Seawolves was disbanded on March 16, 1972, after carrying out a surprising number of <strong>120,000 combat sorties in South Vietnam and Cambodia, with 44 airmen killed in action and 200 wounded<\/strong>, becoming the most decorated naval aviation unit in US history.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53730209223_840e4f1b50_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The emblem of the Navy Rotary Wing Weapons School (RWWS), better known as \"Seawolf\" (Source: Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center).<\/div>\n<p>It soon became evident that the US Navy still needed units of this type. <strong>On July 1, 1976, Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 84 (HSC-84) \"Red Wolves\" was formed<\/strong>, as heir to the HAL-3 and sharing the same insignia: a wolf with a trident and a shield, but in this case the wolf became red instead of blue. This unit was operational until March 19, 2016, and was based at NAS Norfolk, Virginia. <strong>Today the legacy of the Seawolves is preserved by the RWWS<\/strong>, which functions as section N8 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airpac.navy.mil\/Organization\/Naval-Aviation-Warfighting-Development-Center\/About-Us\/Directorates\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Naval Aviation Warfare Development Center (NAWDC)<\/a>. Top Gun is the N7.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53730442930_c5fe5ce83d_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">One of the MH-60S Seahawks used by Seawolf as an aggressor aircraft, with a desert camouflage (Source: Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center).<\/div>\n<p>The US Navy notes the following about Seawolf:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Navy\u2019s Rotary Wing Weapons School <strong>is composed of a staff of 25 pilots and aircrewmen who instruct the Seahawk Weapons and Tactics Instructor program<\/strong>; provide tactics instructors to fleet squadrons;  maintain and develop the Navy's helicopter tactics doctrine via the SEAWOLF Manual; instruct the Navy's Mountain Flying School; provide high-altitude, mountainous flight experience for sea-going squadrons; and <strong>provide academic, ground, flight, and opposing-forces instruction for visiting aircrew<\/strong> during Air Wing Fallon detachments.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53729092442_e052716025_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">Another of Seawolf's MH-60S attackers (Source: Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center).<\/div>\n<p>A few days ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/video\/921920\/b-roll-20240502-take-off-sikorsky-seahawk-01a\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the NAWDC published some videos of the helicopters used by the Seawolf as aggressor aircraft<\/a>, that is, those that play the role of opposing forces during the training of naval helicopter aviators. <strong>Seawolf has several MH-60S Seahawk helicopters for this mission<\/strong>, but the most striking thing about the aircraft that has been seen recently is that <strong>two of the MH-60S are camouflaged as if they were helicopters Russians<\/strong>, following the tradition of the US Navy aggressor units.
