{"id":56131,"date":"2024-06-06T20:59:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-06T18:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=56131"},"modified":"2025-12-05T18:23:01","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T17:23:01","slug":"taps-and-the-f-35a-doing-the-missing-man-the-most-evocative-moment-of-d-day-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/06\/06\/taps-and-the-f-35a-doing-the-missing-man-the-most-evocative-moment-of-d-day-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"'Taps' and the F-35A doing the 'Missing man', the most evocative moment of D-Day 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today marks the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings, one of the most decisive operations of World War II.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"hhttps:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/06\/05\/the-moving-return-of-world-war-ii-veterans-to-normandy-80-years-later\/\">The moving return of World War II veterans to Normandy 80 years later<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/06\/04\/world-war-ii-military-vehicles-and-aircraft-in-normandy-for-the-80th-anniversary-of-d-day\/\">World War II military vehicles and aircraft in Normandy for the 80th anniversary of D-Day<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><strong>This day has been full of commemorative events in Normandy and other places.<\/strong> It would be difficult to summarize them all here, but I want to show you some images that have caught my attention.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53773774366_38bcbc2bd9_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This first image shows <strong>the tribute to the commandos of the 1st Marine Rifle Battalion of France<\/strong>, under the command of Philippe Kieffer, who were part of the first wave of landings on Sword Beach, a French contribution to the D-Day of which very little is talked about (photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MarineNationale\/status\/1798738723854819719\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Nationale<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53772854612_274faaa15a_h.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another memorable image was <strong>the joint pass made by the Red Arrows and the Patrouille de France<\/strong>, the aerobatic teams of the British and French air forces, over Omaha Beach (photos: <a href=\"https:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/kensingtonpalace\/53772730862\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Parsons<\/a> \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PAFofficiel\/status\/1798761014932247007\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Patrouille de France<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53773774341_18f93fbd8f_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Below these lines, a beautiful image of <strong>soldiers of the 75th Ranger Regiment of the US Army paying tribute to their fallen comrades<\/strong> in the Normandy American Cemetery, next to Omaha Beach (photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/image\/8455120\/normandy-american-cemetery-80th-anniversary-commemoration-invasion-normandy\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dvidshub.net<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53773976013_5eff5beb16_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During the official ceremonies at the Normandy American Cemetery, <strong>three C-130J Super Hercules flew in formation, two of them sporting the famous invasion stripes<\/strong> that were painted on the aircraft that participated in the Day's operations. Jonathan Bryson<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53774096774_ecf9ac9a1f_h.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Without a doubt, <strong>the most evocative moment of the day occurred in the aforementioned cemetery next to Omaha Beach<\/strong>. Following the official speeches, United States military personnel performed <strong>the French military call \"Aux Morts\" (To the Dead) and the American bugle call \"Taps\"<\/strong>, all while the military and veterans performed the military greeting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The tribute to the Fallen culminated with 21 artillery salvos<\/strong> fired by members of the 529th Military Police Company of the US Army with 105 mm M101 howitzers (a model from World War II), followed by <strong>a pass of four F-35A fighters<\/strong> from the 493rd Fighter Squadron of the US Air Force, based at RAF Lakenheath (England), <strong>doing the \"Missing man formation\"<\/strong>, in which a plane rises above the others remembering the Fallen.
