In recent days, Poland has suffered historic flooding, which has particularly affected the southwestern part of the country.<\/p>\n

Due to the rains from Storm Boris, several rivers in the country have overflowed, causing severe flooding.<\/strong> The water has destroyed bridges and dams and inundated entire villages, leaving several dead and forcing the evacuation of thousands of people.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Polish Army has mobilised more than 20,000 soldiers from several branches<\/strong> (Ground Forces, Air Force, Navy, Special Forces and Territorial Defence Force) to help the affected people. Polish soldiers have helped in a number of ways:<\/strong> rescuing trapped people by air and land, evacuating people from flooded villages, providing humanitarian aid, creating barriers to prevent the passage of water, etc.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This natural disaster has particularly demonstrated the importance of the Territorial Defence Force (WOT),<\/strong> which was established in 2017 and serves a similar purpose to the US National Guard. The WOT soldiers<\/strong>, easily identifiable by their brown berets and rogatywkas (traditional Polish diamond-shaped caps), have proven their worth in the face of this tragedy,<\/strong> and have confirmed how necessary a good defence culture is for a country, not only in times of war, but also in times of peace.<\/p>\n

Poland has always had reason to be proud of its Army,<\/strong> which over the centuries has seen such glorious events as the defeat of the Teutonic Knights at the Battle of Grunwald<\/strong> (1410), the charge of the Winged Hussars at the Siege of Vienna<\/strong> in 1683, the Bolshevik defeat at the Battle of Warsaw<\/strong> in 1920, or the resistance against Nazi Germany in the Second World War<\/strong>. Once again, Poland has reason to be proud of its Army, of the men and women who contribute to its defence day after day.<\/p>\n
