Spain will round out its fleet in 2026 with an additional aircraft ordered last year. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/0lJxgZQR35\">pic.twitter.com\/0lJxgZQR35<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Boeing Defense (@BoeingDefense) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BoeingDefense\/status\/1846200946595938683?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 15, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Boeing Defense added: <em>\"But there's more to come for the longest-serving international Chinook operator. <strong>Spain will round out its fleet in 2026 with an additional aircraft ordered last year.<\/strong>\"<\/em> The announcement of the acquisition of this 18th CH-47F was made by the Head of the Army Logistics Support Command, Lieutenant General Fernando Garc\u00eda y Garc\u00eda de las Hijas, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensa.com\/espana\/entrevistamos-jefe-mando-apoyo-logistico-ejercito-tierra-general\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an interview published by Defensa.com<\/a> on October 12, 2022.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51856751983_a73f57a354_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The new digitalized cockpit of the CH-47F (Photo: Ej\u00e9rcito de Tierra).<\/div>\n<p>As I already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/10\/09\/the-spanish-army-shows-the-load-capacity-of-its-chinook-heavy-helicopters\/\">commented here<\/a> a year ago, <strong>Spain purchased a total of 19 CH-47 Chinook helicopters in two batches:<\/strong> the first 10 were of the CH-47C variant and arrived in Spain in 1973, while the second batch was purchased in 1982, with a total of 9 CH-47Ds. <strong>Two of the helicopters were lost in accidents.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/asn.flightsafety.org\/wikibase\/146185\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The first, CH-47C Z.17-1,<\/a> was lost in an accident on 20 February 1973, with no casualties. <a href=\"https:\/\/asn.flightsafety.org\/wikibase\/146186\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The second, CH-47D HT.17-13,<\/a> was lost in an accident on 17 January 1995, also with no casualties. Now, instead of buying new helicopters, <strong>the 17 CH-47Fs received so far by Spain are the existing CH-47Ds with a thorough modernization<\/strong>, in which the components of the aircraft of the V Transport Helicopter Battalion (BHELTRA V), based in Colmenar Viejo (Madrid), have been used to the maximum.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53848689340_d26ce0d941_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">A Spanish CH-47F, the HT.17-29A (ET-429) flying in Iraq (Photo: U.S. Army).<\/div>\n<p><strong>New features on these CH-47Fs include 21 AN\/AAR-57A(V)8 Common Missile Warning Systems (CMWS)<\/strong>, 42 Global Positioning Systems (GPS) integrated into the helicopters\u2019 Inertial Navigation System (INS), aircraft survivability kits (ASE) and navigation equipment including AN\/ARC-231 multimode radios, AN\/ARC-201D SINCGARS radios, AN\/ARC-220 high frequency (HF) radios, AN\/AAR-57A(V)8 Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) systems, and an AN\/APR-39A(V)1 Radar Signal Detection Suite (RSDS).<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51196322418_21ec26ea00_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The rescue of a Spanish Tiger attack helicopter by a CH-47D in Slovenia in 2021 (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eposavje.com\/ostale-novice\/resevalna-akcija-spanskega-helikopterja-uspela\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ePosavje.com<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>The 18th Spanish CH-47F, expected in 2026, will be the first new CH-47F that Spain will receive.<\/strong> This aircraft finally completes, 31 years later, the fleet of 18 Chinooks that the FAMET previously had. <strong>These helicopters have proven extremely useful,<\/strong> both for transporting troops and cargo and for lifting vehicles, artillery pieces and even other helicopters, as we saw three years ago when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2021\/06\/02\/el-rescate-del-helicoptero-tigre-del-ejercito-espanol-en-eslovenia-visto-desde-el-chinook\/\">a FAMET CH-47D rescued a crashed Tigre attack helicopter<\/a> in Slovenia.
