Hours after being charged by the Supreme Court for an alleged crime of revealing secrets, the Attorney General of the State, Álvaro García Ortiz, gave an interview in which he stated:

"I am not under investigation or charged. What the ruling says is that the Supreme Court is the only authority competent to conduct an investigation into emails that the Attorney General of the State may have leaked."

It is astonishing to see the Attorney General of the State lie in such a blatant way, considering that we are talking about a matter that anyone can verify. The Supreme Court's note is titled as follows:

"The Supreme Court opens a case against the State Attorney General for an alleged crime of revealing secrets."

And this is what that note says in its first two paragraphs:

"The Criminal Chamber has unanimously agreed to open a case against the Attorney General of the State, Álvaro García Ortiz, for an alleged crime of disclosure of secrets in relation to the dissemination of data related to an investigation into crimes of tax fraud and falsification of documents against an individual.

The court has also declared its jurisdiction to investigate the head prosecutor of the Madrid province, Pilar Rodríguez Fernández, who allegedly sent the Attorney General of the State data for the preparation of the aforementioned note. Although she does not have the status of privileged person, the order explains that both behaviours - that of the Attorney General and hers - have an inseparable connection that prevents the initiation of separate cases."

The note ends by stating the following: "The appropriate investigative procedures must be initiated, in order to confirm or rule out the sufficient indications of criminality previously analyzed, as well as the degree of indicative participation of the defendants in them."

To say that this is not being "investigated or charged" is to take the Spanish people for idiots or illiterate. Obviously, García Ortiz does this for the same reason that Sánchez and his ministers have a habit of lying with absolute shamelessness: they know that their friendly media will simply reproduce this lie.

It is enough to listen to his words last night on TVE to see that García Ortiz does not care about further discrediting the institution he represents, a discredit to which he has already contributed decisively by becoming the first attorney general to be charged with a crime in all the years of democracy in Spain. Lying as he did last night is telling the Spanish people to their faces that the Attorney General's Office is not to be trusted. If there were any doubts that García Ortiz has a lot to lose in this legal case, yesterday he himself made it very clear with this gross lie.

---

Image: RTVE.

Cynicism has become the hallmark of Pedro Sánchez’s socialist government when it comes to dealing with any scandal.

[19536,10398
19489,22885,15565
post-57458","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-we-said-yesterday","category-spain","tag-alvaro-garcia-ortiz","tag-attorney-generals-of-the-state-of-spain","tag-supreme-court-of-spain
