This week, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79) arrived at Naval Station Rota, in Spain.<\/p>\n

The USS Oscar Austin is the fifth US destroyer to be based in Rota, with one more planned.<\/strong> The reason for the presence of these ships in Spain is the NATO's anti-missile shield in Europe<\/a>, which has its main base in Rota and the only one that houses ships with the Aegis defense system<\/strong> as part of this shield (there are also two land-based Aegis systems in Deveselu, Romania, and Redzikowo, Poland).<\/p>\n

The USS Oscar Austin arrived in Rota on the morning of Tuesday, October 15<\/strong>, as captured in the photo above. With this arrival, this destroyer has completed its transfer to Rota from its home base in Norfolk, Virginia.<\/p>\n

On October 15, Commander Scott Burrill, commanding officer of the USS Oscar Austin, raised the Spanish flag on the destroyer<\/strong> in the company of Captain Ernesto Guesos, commander of the 41st Escort Squadron of the Spanish Navy, equipped with six frigates of the \"Santa Mar\u00eda\" class (based on the American Oliver Hazard Perry class).<\/p>\n

A welcoming ceremony for the USS Oscar Austin was held in Rota on October 16.<\/strong> Here we see Commander Scott Burrill saluting the American sailors during this ceremony.<\/p>\n

This ceremony was attended by Admiral Eugenio D\u00edaz del R\u00edo J\u00e1udenes<\/strong>, Admiral of the Spanish Navy Fleet, who addressed a few words to our allies on the occasion of the arrival of this new ship. Below, sailors from Spain and the United States with the flags of both countries and the flag of the US Navy<\/strong> during this welcoming ceremony for the USS Oscar Austin.<\/p>\n

It should be noted that Rota is one of the most desired foreign destinations for the US Navy<\/strong>, due to the good climate and quality of life in Spain. In fact, some US sailors already have ties with Spain beyond military life. An example of this can be seen in this video published today by the US Embassy in Spain, in which two members of the US Navy present their destroyer in Spanish<\/strong>.
