In Europe we have similar cases of waste of public funds. We recently saw here <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/10\/02\/the-history-and-current-state-of-the-five-ghost-stations-of-the-barcelona-metro\/\">the case of the Gaud\u00ed Station of the Barcelona Metro<\/a>, built but never inaugurated. <strong>There is an even worse case in Belgium.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54166731931_055f2b90b1_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">An abandoned section between Waterloo and Neuville stations on line five, a ghost line that could be inaugurated in 2027 (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Metro_Charleroi_-_Crossover_between_Waterloo_and_Neuville_stations.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IIVQ \/ Tijmen Stam<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>The Charleroi Metro<\/strong> (actually a semi-metro, with some sections above ground) <strong>was first planned in the 1960s<\/strong> as part of a project to provide five Belgian cities with their own metro networks: one in Brussels (which has its own administrative region), two in Flanders and two in Wallonia. Two of the planned cities (Li\u00e8ge in Wallonia and Ghent in Flanders) withdrew from the project.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54166746911_780d51da41_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">One of the abandoned stations of the Charleroi Metro (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Sta\u021bia_Pens\u00e9e_din_Charleroi_02.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nenea Hartia<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>Due to a policy of equal distribution of funds between Flanders and Wallonia,<\/strong> in order to avoid the traditional disputes between these two large regions of Belgium, <strong>Charleroi, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrotrends.net\/global-metrics\/cities\/20145\/charleroi\/population\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with 421,000 inhabitants in its metropolitan area in 1970,<\/a> found itself with funds equivalent to Antwerp, with 855,000 inhabitants.<\/strong> This led to poor planning of its metro.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54166731856_f5f26fa38a_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The escalators at Chet station. However, the city lost population, falling to 392,000 inhabitants in its metropolitan area in 1995. In addition, in 1980, due to the <strong>excessive public debt<\/strong> caused by the policy of equal distribution of funds between Flanders and Wallonia, the Belgian government gave greater autonomy to the regions and <strong>Wallonia decided to cut back on the Charleroi Metro project.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54167003968_434492f194_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The platforms of the abandoned Chet station (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/robert_glod\/48651651908\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Glod<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p>Due to these cuts, <strong>the initial eight lines were reduced to one, which was opened in 1976<\/strong>, although three more lines were finally opened in 2012.
