The reason for this is not because it is home to a community of Amish, the famous Anabaptist Christian group that embraces a very traditional way of life. In this case, <strong>there is a federal ban on devices that emit a certain amount of electromagnetic radiation<\/strong>, such as Wi-Fi hotspots, cell phones and microwave ovens. Violators can be fined $50.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54167986472_fc09e15536_o.png\" style=\"width:661px; height:auto; border:2px solid #39491a;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ), covering an area of \u200b\u200b33,669 square kilometers between Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland (Image: <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:National_Radio_Quiet_Zone.svg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joel Bradshaw<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>This curious place is called the <a href=\"https:\/\/greenbankobservatory.org\/about\/national-radio-quiet-zone\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ)<\/a>.<\/strong> This zone was established by the US federal government on November 19, 1958, to <strong>minimize possible harmful interference to the <a href=\"https:\/\/greenbankobservatory.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO)<\/a><\/strong> in Green Bank and the US Navy's radio receiving facilities in Sugar Grove, West Virginia.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54167986457_ed3cd6229a_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The antenna of the Green Bank astronomical observatory (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/clui.org\/newsletter\/spring-2003\/state-focus-west-virginia\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">clui.org<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>The Green Bank NRAO is an astronomical observatory equipped with a giant antenna,<\/strong> with a diameter of 100 meters. Its construction began in 1961 with an initial antenna of 90.44 meters that collapsed on November 15, 1988. <strong>The current antenna was started in 1990 and began its astronomical observations in 2000.<\/strong> It operates 365 days a year and is protected from radio interference by the nearby Allegheny Mountains.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54167986517_87b23ac207_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">A US federal government warning sign next to the Green Bank astronomical observatory (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Warning_signs_at_NRAO_zone_1_entrance.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Z22<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>The US Navy facility at Sugar Grove began construction in 1955<\/strong>, with a 40-foot antenna being commissioned the following year. A new 150-foot antenna was completed in 1968. The base was closed in 2016. South of this naval facility <strong>is another National Security Agency (NSA) station<\/strong> that was part of the ECHELON communications network, dedicated to intercepting and processing electronic telecommunications. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wboy.com\/news\/west-virginia\/6-more-counties-raise-concerns-over-radio-quiet-zone-restrictions\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">This NSA station is still operational.<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54169168604_16649accb2_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The US Navy facility at Sugar Grove in a photo taken in July 2014 (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/stephen_little\/14453965607\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Little<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>The NRQZ covers an area of \u200b\u200babout 13,000 square miles (33,669 square kilometers).<\/strong> To give you an idea, that's larger than the entire <strong>provinces of Zaragoza and Huesca combined<\/strong>. Because of the NRQZ's restrictions, residents of towns in the area rely on <strong>cable and satellite communications<\/strong> for telephone and television service.
