At closer range, <strong>there are other elements that make it possible to end possible missile attacks against a ship: electronic countermeasures<\/strong> (ECM, which disrupt the missiles' radar by flooding it with electromagnetic signals), <strong>anti-aircraft artillery guns<\/strong> (such as the American Phalanx CIWS and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/05\/23\/the-spanish-german-naval-missile-defense-system-ciws-meroka-in-pictures\/\">the Spanish Meroka<\/a>, designed to physically destroy the missile), <strong>and decoys<\/strong>, the purpose of which is to deceive the missile by generating an alternative target.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54171663017_2c251a64cf_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This Wednesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Armada_esp\/status\/1861863011448709216\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Spanish Navy published this spectacular photo of the frigate \"M\u00e9ndez N\u00fa\u00f1ez\" F-104<\/a>, of the \"\u00c1lvaro de Baz\u00e1n\" class, <strong>firing its chaff decoy system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52923973640_a64a784337_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/05\/25\/the-heavy-weapons-carried-on-board-by-the-spanish-frigates-of-the-santa-maria-class\/\">Last year I showed you here this photo of the decoy launchers of the \"Santa Mar\u00eda\" F-81 frigate<\/a>. <strong>This system, manufactured in the USA, is called Mark 36 SRBOC<\/strong> (Super Rapid Bloom Offboard Countermeasures Chaff and Decoy Launching System) and is mounted on both the \"Santa Mar\u00eda\" class (F-80) and the \"\u00c1lvaro de Baz\u00e1n\" class (F-100) frigates, as well as on the \"Meteoro\" class maritime action ships and the \"Galicia\" class amphibious assault ships.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54173017280_0f2df92361_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The decoys are fired by 130 mm Mark 137 launchers<\/strong>, placed in groups of six tubes. Each ship carries four of these groups of launchers, distributed on both sides of the ship in two groups facing in different directions. <strong>Here you can see the starboard Mk 137 launchers of the frigate \"Blas de Lezo\" F-103<\/strong>, in two photos that I took during the visit of this ship to Vigo last July.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54172847228_020e3bb0e1_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Below these lines we can see <strong>two crew members of the frigate \"M\u00e9ndez N\u00fa\u00f1ez\" loading these launchers<\/strong>, in <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Armada_esp\/status\/1862150021287657883\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a photo published yesterday by the Spanish Navy<\/a>. If I'm not mistaken, the black charges are <strong>infrared decoys<\/strong> (i.e. flares to fool heat-guided missiles) and the metallic-looking ones are <strong>chaff<\/strong> (decoys aimed at deceiving radar-guided weapons have been known since World War II, a decoy consisting of small metal strips).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54172848669_227a817dd7_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here we can see the magazine for this ammunition<\/strong>, along with the petty officer who supervises it.
