Curiously, this tank shows the remains of a German Balkenkreuz on its turret, as it was one of the Spanish tanks used in the 1970 film \"Patton\" as German tanks (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/elentir\/8615948073\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elentir<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>The M-48 arrived in Spain in 1965,<\/strong> in a batch of 54 units, when its successor (the M-60 Patton) had already been in service with the US Army for five years. <strong>Spain received a total of 181 M-48s: 164 for the Army and 17 for the Marine Corps,<\/strong> the latter received in 1966. The first Spanish unit to operate the M-48 was the 61st Armored Infantry Regiment \"Alc\u00e1zar de Toledo\", based in El Goloso (Madrid) and currently part of the 12th \"Guadarrama\" Brigade.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53103469873_63f439a5ea_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">M-48A5E2 of the Army in Matalasca\u00f1as (Huelva), during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/08\/08\/crisex-83-un-enorme-ejercicio-militar-con-eeuu-contra-una-posible-invasion-de-espana\/\">the CRISEX 83 exercise<\/a> (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/nara.getarchive.net\/media\/spanish-soldiers-aboard-an-m48-medium-tank-participate-in-the-joint-usspanish-56c2e7\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NARA<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>Many of the Army's M-48s were upgraded to the M-48A5E2 version<\/strong> (and in the 1980s to the M-48A5E3 version), being equipped with 105 mm guns, while those of the Marine Corps were upgraded to the M-48A3E version in 1976, retaining their 90 mm guns. As in the US, <strong>in Spain the M-48 replaced the M-47, and was in turn replaced by the M-60 in 1993<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8404\/8615983323_594da77f3f_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">An M-48A5E3 in the Museum of Armored Units of El Goloso, next to an M-110 self-propelled howitzer (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/elentir\/8615983323\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elentir<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>Some M-48s are still preserved in Spain.<\/strong> Two of them (one with a 90 mm cannon and the other with a 105 mm cannon) can be seen in Madrid, at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2013\/04\/03\/asi-es-el-museo-de-unidades-acorazadas-del-ejercito-espanol-en-el-goloso-madrid\/\">Museo de Unidades Acorazadas de El Goloso<\/a>. Now, in addition, one of the former M-48s of the Spanish Army can be seen on the other side of the world.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53606532699_57a7eaaa6b_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In March, I told you here about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/03\/23\/the-old-spanish-battle-tank-that-will-be-exhibited-in-a-museum-in-australia\/\">the restoration process of an old M-48A5E2 battle tank in Spain for the Australian Ordnance and Artillery Museum<\/a>, based in Cairns, Queensland, a city of about 160,000 inhabitants in the northeast of that country.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54187166846_e2f192d424_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On June 7, the museum posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ausarmour\/posts\/pfbid0Rw5zyJLtCknPjj8m7tmirSm7qj68wGsR7PprJcrKELs2qHvENECWNAYEG2L7Z9RHl\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">these three photos of the arrival of the Spanish M-48 in Australia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54187166861_861e7a6c66_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As I told you in March, <strong>this M-48 has been fitted with wheels from an M-60<\/strong>, perhaps due to a lack of original spare wheels. <strong>The name displayed on the barge is \"Babieca\"<\/strong> (the famous horse of El Cid) and the number 110. In addition, on the front of the barge, <strong>the M-48 has the emblem of the Cavalry Regiment \"Montesa\" No. 3  painted<\/strong>, a unit based in Ceuta.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54187433643_0b2a455728_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On August 9, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=897745409049602&set=pb.100064424540437.-2207520000&type=3\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Australian museum published this photo of the Spanish M-48 in its hangars<\/a>. We can see the Spanish flag painted on its right front side, and the shield with the Cross of the Order of Montesa and the lances of the Cavalry Weapon.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54187452404_1ab327f4a8_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On August 14, the museum published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=900957265395083&set=pb.100064424540437.-2207520000&type=3\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this new photo of its Spanish M-48<\/a>, this time taken outside and with a novelty: <strong>the tank has the protective cover that the Spanish M-48s used on the gun shield<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54187607935_38b85d7bdc_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here we see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=911795097644633&set=pb.100064424540437.-2207520000&type=3\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">another photo published on August 30<\/a>, in which we can also see the smoke grenade launchers (four on each side of the turret).
