The ship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/10\/18\/the-united-states-navy-shows-its-new-destroyer-in-spain-with-a-video-in-spanish\/\">arrived in Rota on October 15,<\/a> making the Spanish naval base its home port.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54202736565_bb259674f7_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Oscar Austin carries an MH-60R Sea Hawk multipurpose helicopter<\/strong>, belonging to the second detachment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airlant.usff.navy.mil\/hsm60\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 60 \"Jaguars\"<\/a>, based at NAVSTA Jacksonville, Florida.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54202563974_f4950d956f_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The ship is named after Oscar P. Austin<\/strong> (1948-1969), a private first class in the U.S. Marine Corps <strong>who jumped on a grenade thrown by an enemy soldier during the Vietnam War, saving the life of a wounded comrade.<\/strong> Severely wounded, Austin still had the strength to cover his comrade with his body when a Vietnamese soldier fired at him, and was killed in action on February 23, 1969. <strong>For his heroism, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1970.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54202563944_e929e3b7eb_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/image\/8796917\/uss-oscar-austin-ddg-79-conducts-ammunition-onload\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the US Navy released a series of photos<\/a> taken on Tuesday, December 10, at the Rota Naval Base. They show something unusual.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54202736550_a3ac6950db_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>These photos show the missile loading process on that ship.<\/strong> The Oscar Austin, like the other Arleigh Burke-class Flight IIA ships, <strong>carries 96 missile cells in its bow section<\/strong> (earlier ships of that class carried 90 cells).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54202557248_85d76b2825_h.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>These photos show the missile loading process on that ship.<\/strong> The Oscar Austin, like the other Arleigh Burke-class Flight IIA ships, <strong>carries 96 missile cells in its bow section<\/strong> (earlier ships of that class carried 90 cells).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54202557368_97f79a6984_h.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The US Navy usually carries on board these destroyers <strong>RIM-66M, RIM-156 RIM-174A and RIM-162 ESSM type SAMs<\/strong>, as well as <strong>RIM-161 SM-3<\/strong> anti-ballistic missiles, which have been in service for ten years and which, in addition to having the capacity to shoot down ballistic missiles, can also destroy satellites in low orbits.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54202557258_97f954aade_h.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The most common surface-to-surface missiles on these launchers are the famous BGM-109 Tomahawk<\/strong>, the most recent versions of which can reach targets more than 1,600 kilometers from the ship. <strong>The anti-submarine missiles are of the RUM-139 VL-ASROC type<\/strong>, with a range of up to 22 kilometers.
