In addition, <strong>the USAF also operates ten Lockheed LC-130 Hercules from the New York Air National Guard<\/strong>, equipped with skis to be able to operate on the frozen ground of the continent.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54245574732_e722fd56ef_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>These aircraft support personnel of the<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usap.gov\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United States Antarctic Program (USAP)<\/a>, which operates three research stations on the continent: <a href=\"https:\/\/new.nsf.gov\/geo\/opp\/ail\/mcmurdo-station\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">McMurdo Station<\/a> (on Ross Island), <a href=\"https:\/\/new.nsf.gov\/geo\/opp\/ail\/amundson-scott-south-pole-station\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station<\/a> (located at the geographic South Pole), and <a href=\"https:\/\/new.nsf.gov\/geo\/opp\/ail\/palmer-station\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Palmer Station<\/a> (on Anvers Island). In addition, USAP maintains dozens of temporary camps of various sizes in Antarctica.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54245574762_a9cc4d9c90_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>USAF flights to Antarctica operate from Christchurch, New Zealand,<\/strong> home to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iceberg.co.nz\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Antarctic Center<\/a>, which serves as the gateway to the frozen continent. <strong>USAP McMurdo Station has four airstrips on Ross Island:<\/strong> two ice runways (McMurdo and Pegasus Field), suitable for LC-130s, and two snow runways (Phoenix Airfield and Williams Field), suitable for C-17s.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54245574737_5e3c1039f8_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This Thursday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@Mattykjordan\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matty Jordan<\/a> <strong>posted an interesting video showing a C-17 ride from Christchurch to Phoenix Airfield,<\/strong> one of the runways at McMurdo Station, and then on to Scott Base, a New Zealand research station on Ross Island:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Flying to Antarctica in a C17 Globemaster\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/D2JvC9LdF2U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A note: <strong>in the video you can see a Basler BT-67 of the Canadian airline Kenn Borek Air<\/strong> (point 8:16), that is, an old Douglas DC-3 equipped with Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-67R turboprop engines.
