It is in the eastern part of the Bay of Bayona. With <strong>about 1,300 metres long<\/strong> it is the second largest beach in Nigr\u00e1n, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/04\/14\/patos-beach-the-beautiful-surfers-paradise-on-the-southern-shore-of-the-vigo-estuary\/\">Patos Beach<\/a> (1,440 metres).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54284105915_6137311464_6k.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54284105915_c6a8bc9892_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The coast of America Beach is bordered by the Monte Lourido peninsula to the south and by the Panj\u00f3n beach to the north. <strong>Sometimes it may seem that Panj\u00f3n and Am\u00e9rica are the same beach, but they are divided by a small river<\/strong>, called Mui\u00f1os, and they are part of two different parishes: Panj\u00f3n is part of the parish of the same name, while America Beach is part of the parish of San Pedro de la Ramallosa. Above these lines, the Monteferro peninsula seen from Playa Am\u00e9rica.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54283928283_79c3d0346e_6k.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54283928283_bc62d8da72_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Without a doubt, <strong>America Beach is one of the most famous beaches for tourists<\/strong> who come to the R\u00edas Bajas (Low Estuaries) every summer. Its views are spectacular and the quality of its sand is very good.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54284105855_e9e2e94208_6k.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54284105855_231d28e554_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The European Blue Flag has been flying here for decades<\/strong>, which indicates the good conditions of this beach and the services it offers. In addition to sunbathing, <strong>America Beach is a good place for recreation in summer, even at night,<\/strong> since there is a wide variety of restaurants and cafes in its vicinity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54283928208_abc7b8afb2_6k.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54283928208_5e167b22fe_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>In winter the beach is quieter, as shown in these photos I took there on January 12th<\/strong>, although when the sun is shining, many people from the surrounding area come to this jewel of sand to walk and, for the more daring, even surf or go for a swim.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54283681921_872a66e859_6k.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54283681921_ebe4085ed0_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the past, this beach was called Lourido or Area Loura<\/strong> (Blonde Sand, in Galician), which describes the golden colour of this beautiful stretch of coast. Its current name has a curious origin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54282793852_20d6a7869d_6k.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54282793852_c1ba819679_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Eduardo Rolland explained a few years ago in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vigoe.es\/vigo\/mas-vigo\/la-invencion-de-playa-america\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vigoe.es<\/a>, in 1927 a Galician emigrant who returned from Argentina, <strong>Manuel Lemos, founded a hotel establishment next to this beach, called Hotel Playa Am\u00e9rica<\/strong>, a name designed to attract tourism.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54283682071_18273316b8_6k.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54283682071_3a0ecebc3e_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the following years, the beach began to be urbanized<\/strong>, with the construction of some of the oldest chalets that are still there today. And that is how the name \"Playa Am\u00e9rica\" \u200b\u200bbecame popular.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54282793947_d9fb564633_6k.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54282793947_a6ece01174_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a note for maritime lighthouse enthusiasts, <strong>from this beach you can see two beacons clearly:<\/strong> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2012\/04\/16\/baliza-de-cabezo-de-san-juan\/\">Cabezo de San Juan<\/a>, in Bayona Bay, and the closest in this photo, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2015\/04\/27\/faro-de-los-islotes-serralleiras\/\">the Serralleiras Islets lighthouse<\/a>, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/01\/02\/estelas-islands-an-uninhabited-spanish-archipelago-and-a-sunken-ship-close-to-it\/\">Estelas Islands<\/a>, which is the one we see in the background.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54283920684_364c05780f_6k.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54283920684_4ca3aa8045_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>This is a place that I have a great affection for<\/strong>, as I have spent many good times there since my earliest childhood.
