They are the autonomous city of <strong>Ceuta<\/strong> (the largest Spanish territory in Africa), the autonomous city of <strong>Melilla<\/strong> and the <strong>Pe\u00f1\u00f3n de V\u00e9lez de la Gomera<\/strong>, which is the smallest territory of these three.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54319663116_2916fbdf5e_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54319663116_0f266c7fc8_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Pe\u00f1\u00f3n de V\u00e9lez de la Gomera is located between the two cities mentioned above<\/strong>, specifically 117 kilometres east of Ceuta and 126 kilometres west of Melilla. This site has an area of \u200b\u200babout 19,000 square metres and a maximum height of 87 metres.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54319663141_f71b37f0cc_h.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54319663141_2db7d12e78_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>This rock has belonged to Spain since 1564<\/strong>, although it had already been Spanish territory before that date. In the following centuries, <strong>the Moroccans tried to take it by force several times<\/strong>, sending armies that considerably outnumbered the Spanish garrison there, <strong>but they were always defeated and the Spanish flag has continued to fly there<\/strong> to the present day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54319892398_b408d81073_h.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54319892398_aa63222c6f_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that <strong>the Pe\u00f1\u00f3n de V\u00e9lez de la Gomera was once an island<\/strong>, but an earthquake in August 1930 connected this rock to the northern coast of Morocco. However, access to this Spanish square from the Moroccan side is closed. <strong>The rock has a helipad on its upper part<\/strong>, where there are also accommodations for the soldiers who guard this place.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54320076140_c3f4c63cb1_h.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54320076140_e2d4cb9615_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rock of V\u00e9lez de la Gomera is closely linked to the 52nd Melilla Regular Group<\/strong>, as this unit of the Army is the one in charge of its custody. The emblem of this unit can be seen at the top of the rock.
