{"id":58696,"date":"2025-02-11T23:33:10","date_gmt":"2025-02-11T22:33:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=58696"},"modified":"2025-03-02T23:27:58","modified_gmt":"2025-03-02T22:27:58","slug":"spanish-urban-explorers-enter-a-former-british-naval-base-in-malta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/02\/11\/spanish-urban-explorers-enter-a-former-british-naval-base-in-malta\/","title":{"rendered":"Spanish urban explorers enter a former British naval base in Malta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Malta, an archipelago located in the Mediterranean Sea and now an independent country, was a British colony from 1814 to 1964.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/06\/20\/an-exploration-of-the-former-hidden-depots-for-raf-aircraft-in-gibraltar\/\">An exploration of the former hidden depots for RAF aircraft in Gibraltar<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/05\/10\/inchindown-a-former-royal-navy-depot-which-has-the-longest-echo-in-the-world\/\">Inchindown: a former Royal Navy depot which has the longest echo in the world<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Royal Navy had a number of facilities in Malta<\/strong>, including a naval base in Valletta harbour, an ammunition depot (RNAD Corradino), two torpedo depots (RNTD Kalafrana and RNTD Msida) and a fortified position (RNAD HMS St. Angelo). <strong>These facilities were of vital importance during the Second World War<\/strong>, when Malta became a place of maximum strategic importance, being repeatedly attacked by the Germans.<\/p>\n<p>Following Malta's independence, <strong>the British military presence in Malta continued until 31 March 1979<\/strong>, when the last British troops left, a date remembered by the Maltese as Freedom Day. Last Sunday, the Youtube channel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@okos\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Okos<\/a> published <strong>a video showing Spanish urban explorers exploring a former underground Royal Navy facility in Malta<\/strong>, which they accessed via the port of Valletta (the video is in Spanish, you can activate automatic English subtitles in the bottom bar of the player):<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Me Infiltr\u00e9 en un B\u00daNKER MILITAR de la Segunda Guerra Mundial\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JX-GBKK9ezs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Although the video gives no details of the location of the facility, <strong>what we see appears to be the RNAD Corradino ammunition depot<\/strong> (called Kordin by the British) and <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofmalta.com\/article\/Asbestos-can-still-be-found-in-underground-power-station.376959\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">next-door underground power station<\/a>, which was owned by the British Armed Forces until 1979, before being taken over by the Enemalta company, which operated it until 1992.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This facility has been described as \u201cone of the most impressive sites of industrial archaeology in Malta\u201d<\/strong>, according to the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Malta, Robert Ghirlando. <strong>The big problem with this facility is asbestos<\/strong>, which is why the Spanish explorers entered wearing protective masks. At the top of this post we see what appears to be <strong>one of the old ammunition depots of the RNAD Corradino<\/strong>, although it could have been used later as a spare parts store, judging by its current contents. Above these lines we can see <strong>the ventilation towers of the underground power station<\/strong>, located on Corradino Hill, next to the facilities of the port of Valletta.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54321945703_6b9a1c4533_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The video features this interesting image in which we see <strong>one of the dry docks in the port of Valletta, with the British patrol vessel HMS Trent (P224)<\/strong> located inside.
