As we mark three years since the start of the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, I believe it is timely to take stock of the situation for the invaders.<\/p>\n
More than 20,500 vehicles and weapons systems<\/big><\/p>\n Russian propaganda has led many to believe that Russia has unlimited resources<\/strong> and that international sanctions have not affected its economy. Of course, this is not true. According to data compiled by Oryxspioenkop.com<\/a>, which has been graphically documenting Russian losses in this war, Russia has already lost 20,506 vehicles and weapons systems, including 11,908 armored vehicles, of which 3,773 were tanks.<\/strong> As a result of these material losses, Russia has had to draw on very old T-62, T-55, and T-54 tanks from its reserves. In addition, Russia has lost 136 planes, 151 helicopters, 579 drones and 28 ships<\/strong>, leaving its Black Sea fleet virtually inoperative.<\/p>\n Russian journalists estimate 165,000 invaders killed in combat<\/big><\/p>\n On the other hand, 100,000 Russian soldiers have already been documented killed in this war<\/a>. The real death toll is likely to be much higher<\/strong>. Russian soldier deaths in combat in this invasion are increasing at a considerable rate, despite the meager territorial gains obtained by Moscow. Let us remember that in March 2024, Russian journalists put the number of Russian invaders killed in Ukraine at 49,281<\/a>. Today, the same journalists put the number of deaths suffered by the invaders at 165,000<\/a>.<\/p>\n Figures that exceed those of the Soviet defeat in Afghanistan<\/big><\/p>\n Let us remember that in the Afghan War, the USSR lost 147 tanks and had 14,453 dead<\/a>, and that war ended in a Soviet defeat<\/strong>. Putin does not seem to mind sacrificing a multitude of young Russians to feed the nationalist ravings of the Russian dictator. Russia has lost more than 50% of the military equipment it had in 2022<\/a>, losses that the Russian military industry is unable to replace, especially due to international sanctions. It should also be noted that Putin is depleting military reserves from the Soviet era<\/a>.<\/p>\n The effects of war and sanctions on the Russian economy<\/big><\/p>\n Another major chapter of losses for Russia is the economic one. The ruble has depreciated<\/a>, shooting up inflation to 10%<\/a>, with considerable increases in prices for basic products<\/a>. In addition, due to the excessive public spending that this war is costing the Russian Federation, the public deficit has skyrocketed<\/a>, reaching a record 28 billion euros. To this must be added that more than a thousand global companies have left Russia<\/a>, with capital flight amounting to 250 billion dollars<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Russia was already in deep economic trouble before this war. Putin believed that his problems would be solved by a quick invasion of Ukraine<\/strong>, driven by the mistaken expectation - fueled by Russian propaganda - that the conquest of that country would be accomplished in a few days and with little resistance. Putin has driven himself into a blind alley, driven by his nationalist fanaticism.<\/strong> Now, his only hope is to get Trump to give him from an office what Russia has been unable to win on the front, by pressuring Ukraine to surrender.
