It was designed for the US Navy in 2004.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54367950455_372b831cf1_3k.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54367950455_94e9f3e23d_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While a Browning M2HB (a widely used variant of the M2 today) has a rate of fire of between 450 and 550 rounds per minute, <strong>an M3M can reach a rate of fire of 1,100 rounds per minute.<\/strong> Both the M2 and M3M have an effective range of about 2,000 meters, and can reach up to 6,800 meters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54367778688_4bc5d8a8d1_3k.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54367778688_3427b58011_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The M3M's high rate of fire generates more heat in the barrel,<\/strong> which is why this machine gun features a perforated sleeve around its barrel to improve cooling and extend its lifespan. <strong>Each barrel of an M3M can withstand up to 10,000 rounds,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/fnamerica.com\/products\/weapon-systems\/fn-m3m-gau-21\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to the manufacturer.<\/a> In addition, the M3M features a flash suppressor on the end of its barrel, in order to reduce its firing signature and improve its compatibility with night vision equipment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54367778658_03e25162d2_3k.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54367778658_ab7290bb01_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>In this image we see the gunner wearing a Gentex HGU-56\/P helmet<\/strong> with maxillofacial protector, commonly used by FAMET helicopter crews. As we can see in the video, <strong>the M3Ms mounted on the Spanish NH-90s carry<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.donginoptical.com\/en\/portfolio\/dcl120\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DI Optical DCL120 red dot sights<\/a>. This sight is a model specially developed for 12.7 mm calibre heavy machine guns. These sights weigh 3,100 grams and allow the gunner to improve their aim both day and night. They can operate in extreme conditions, from 71\u00baC to -41\u00baC.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54367950460_f7a1f95342_3k.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54367950460_285bf6bf4f_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, <strong>in the video we see the replacement of the ammunition box that feeds the M3M machine gun<\/strong>.
