(Photo: U.S. Air Force).<\/div>\n<p><big>Canada has already paid for its first 16 F-35As and expects them by 2026<\/big><\/p>\n<p>Today, <strong>the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) has 92 Hornet fighter aircraft<\/strong>, specifically 85 CF-188A\/Bs (the survivors of the 138 aircraft of the Canadian version of the F\/A-18A\/B) and 7 F\/A-18A\/Bs (out of a total of 18 purchased from Australia in 2017). <strong>Unlike Portugal, Canada had already paid for its first F-35s<\/strong>, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/canada-f35-fighter-jet-deal-1.6707769\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announcing the purchase of 88 units in January 2023<\/a>, for <strong>a total amount of $19 billion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54388742033_7f97514ca5_4k.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54388742033_6753c70e60_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">An F-35A Lightning II from the U.S. Air Force's 354th Fighter Wing flies over Alaska alongside a KC-135R Stratotanker tanker aircraft on April 21, 2020. (Photo: U.S. Air National Guard).<\/div>\n<p>Yesterday, the CBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/f35-blair-trump-1.7484477\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that <strong>Canada has already paid for its first 16 F-35As, with delivery scheduled for early 2026.<\/strong> Canada is therefore the first country to reconsider purchasing this aircraft once the first batch has been contracted.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53527792695_d74d35a9f1_b.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53527792695_d74d35a9f1_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">A Saab JAS-39E Gripen of the Swedish Air Force (Photo: F\u00f6rsvarsmakten).<\/div>\n<p><big>The Swedish JAS-39 Gripen could be Canada's alternative to the F-35<\/big><\/p>\n<p>Regarding the alternatives the Canadian government is considering, the CBC notes: <em>\"<strong>Blair is suggesting that the first F-35s might be accepted and the remainder of the fleet would be made up of aircraft from European suppliers, such as the Swedish-built Saab Gripen<\/strong>, which finished second in the competition\"<\/em> for the Future Fighter Capability Project (FFCP) program, launched to replace the Canadian Hornets. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-canada-picks-us-made-f-35-fighter-jet-as-next-warplane\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canada had already announced in March 2022 that it would opt for the Gripen if negotiations on the F-35 with Lockheed Martin failed<\/a>, a way to pressure the manufacturer to lower the price of the fighters.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53527792700_690d60b787_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53527792700_016b4f9dbb_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">A Swedish JAS-39C Gripen fighter with laser-guided bombs (Photo: Saab).<\/div>\n<p>In addition to the Gripen, other fighters also took part in the FFCP as candidates, specifically <strong>the Eurofighter Typhoon, the Dassault Rafale and the Boeing F\/A-18E\/F Super Hornet<\/strong>. Should Canada's acquisition of the Gripen not go through, the Eurofighter and the Rafale would be the most likely, as <strong>it seems unlikely that the Canadian government will opt for the Super Hornet<\/strong> while the US launches a tariff offensive against Canada and while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/trump-quest-conquer-canada-confusing-everyone-rcna195657\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump continues to launch messages advocating for the annexation of its northern neighbor<\/a> to make it the 51st US state.<\/p>\n<p>---<\/p>\n<p><small>Main photo: U.S. Air National Guard.
