At the time, German special operations units were unprepared for an operation of this magnitude. This was one of the main reasons for the birth of the Kommando Spezialkr\u00e4fte (KSK, Special Forces Command) of the German Army<\/strong>, formed on September 20, 1996, based on the Fallschirmj\u00e4gerkompanien B1 (B1 Paratrooper Companies).<\/p>\n

Since its creation, the KSK has operated in Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and especially in Afghanistan<\/strong>, where this unit suffered its first casualty in combat on May 4, 2013: Staff Sergeant Daniel Wirth. The KSK was one of the special operations groups that protected the evacuation from Afghanistan in the summer of 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Today, the KSK is a brigade-sized force<\/strong> based in Calw (Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg) and divided into two sections, equivalent to battalions:<\/strong> the KSK operational force (consisting of five companies) and a support force (consisting of three companies specializing in support, logistics, and communications, as well as a medical center). The KSK has the best weapons of the German Army as well as its own vehicles<\/strong> designed for special operations.<\/p>\n
