Between 1938 and 1945, Hitler's dictatorship sent around 190,000 people to that camp, of whom more than 90,000 were murdered. Among the prisoners and those murdered were people of different nationalities. This is a Spanish blog, so I'll emphasize that 7,200 Spaniards were sent to that camp, of whom 5,000 were murdered. These prisoners were mostly Spanish Republican exiles in France, who fled to that country at the end of the Spanish Civil War for fear of being murdered in their own country.

On the occasion of the aforementioned anniversary, last Sunday, May 11, an official ceremony was held in Mauthausen in memory of those murdered, attended by the Federal President of Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen. The King and Queen of Spain attended this ceremony, not to pay tribute to the ideology of the Spaniards who were murdered there (there were republicans, anarchists, socialists, communists...), but to pay tribute to thousands of Spaniards who were murdered by a criminal regime that perpetrated crimes of genocide. I do not share the ideology of those murdered, and I find it abhorrent that they were sent to a concentration camp and murdered there.

In recent days, this photo by Hannes Draxler, published by Fotokerschi.At in Austria and distributed in Spain by the Europa Press agency, has been widely shared. On social media, I've seen basically two very common reactions: leftists laughing at the King for being surrounded by republican flags and right-wingers insulting him for the same thing. It's an example of how many people can be manipulated by creating a distorted frame of what happened.

To realize this, just watch this video published by the Royal Household in which the republican flags appear very fleetingly, but where the flags that are clearly seen accompanying the King and Queen are the current flag of Spain, red and yellow, with the shield with the Royal Crown. The Royal Household has published 48 photos of this visit to Mauthausen, and the republican flags only appear in 3 and are clearly distanced from the King and Queen, who were closely accompanied by two national flags, which are those that represent Spain.

Personally, I think it's a great idea that the King and Queen of Spain have visited Mauthausen on this anniversary to pay tribute to the Spaniards murdered there. In fact, with this gesture, Felipe VI demonstrates that his way of understanding Spain is a thousand light years away from the ideological sectarianism of the Sánchez government, which has no respect whatsoever for all those Spaniards who do not share its ideological tenets.

In this article you can see some of the photos published by the Royal Family about the visit of the King and Queen of Spain to Mauthausen, so you can get an idea of how many people have allowed themselves to be manipulated by a single photo taken with a frame that did not show the scene as it really was. I know that some people don't need reasons to hate the King (this was already common on the left and is now also common on some parts of the right), but they would at least do well to find better pretexts.

Finally, some have said that the King should go to the Paracuellos Martyrs' Cemetery, where thousands of Spaniards murdered by the communists are buried. I would be fine with that. Of course, the big difference between Paracuellos and Mauthausen is that the crimes at Paracuellos were perpetrated during a Civil War in which both sides committed atrocities against their political rivals. Felipe VI has not visited either that cemetery or any site in Spain where the victims of the other side are buried, something that the far left cannot forgive him for either, as they see him as an illegitimate Head of State of an institution restored by Franco.

In the end, it turns out that something on which part of the left and part of the right agree: their desire to delegitimize the Crown, despite it being an institution that the Spanish people endorsed by an overwhelming majority in the constitutional referendum and which today is among the most highly valued institutions in Spain.

I’ve been an amateur photographer for many years, and if I’ve learned anything during this time, it’s that many photos have a trick.

[10398
10244,1905,11044,11405,22992,10618,24433,11950
post-59575","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-spain","tag-alexander-van-der-bellen","tag-austria","tag-felipe-vi-of-spain","tag-holocaust","tag-letizia-ortiz","tag-mauthausen","tag-the-king-of-spain","tag-third-reich
"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":
["GET
