It was founded in 1244, and its subsoil hides things unknown to many.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2021\/07\/18\/the-bernauer-strasse-tunnels-in-berlin-underground-routes-to-escape-communism\/\">The Bernauer Strasse tunnels in Berlin: underground routes to escape communism<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/10\/02\/the-history-and-current-state-of-the-five-ghost-stations-of-the-barcelona-metro\/\">The history and current state of the five ghost stations of the Barcelona Metro<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p>Two examples of this lesser-known part of the German capital are <a href=\"https:\/\/fromplacetoplace.travel\/germany\/berlin\/eisack-tunnel\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Eisackstrasse Tunnel<\/a>, abandoned as part of a planned subway line in 1910, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berliner-unterwelten.de\/verein\/forschungsthema-untergrund\/verkehrsbauwerke\/die-blinden-tunnel-berlins.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the abandoned U10 subway station<\/a>, an unfinished subway line that was part of the plan drawn up by the Berlin Senate in the 1950s to build a 200-kilometer underground railway network.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54523134167_e99868abee_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54523134167_b4a344d676_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">Ghost station of the U10 subway line, located above a functioning station at Potsdamer Platz (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berliner-unterwelten.de\/verein\/forschungsthema-untergrund\/verkehrsbauwerke\/die-blinden-tunnel-berlins.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Berliner Unterwelten e.V.<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p>Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ghost_station\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">during the Cold War, there were 16 ghost subway stations in Berlin<\/a>, <strong>located beneath Soviet-controlled East Berlin<\/strong>, through which West Berlin subway trains (controlled by the US, France, and the UK) passed without stopping. <strong>These stations were closed from 1961 to 1989 and 1990<\/strong>, and were seen daily by passengers using those subway lines.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54524002341_948db9ee6d_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54524002341_4076dfce6f_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The Dresdener Strasse ghost subway station in a 1996 photo. This station was filled with earth in 2015 (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berliner-unterwelten.de\/verein\/forschungsthema-untergrund\/verkehrsbauwerke\/die-blinden-tunnel-berlins.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Berliner Unterwelten e.V.<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p>Berlin's underground hides other little-known sites, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berliner-unterwelten.de\/fuehrungen\/oeffentliche-fuehrungen\/bunker-u-bahn-kalter-krieg.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pankstrase bunker, built during the Cold War<\/a> next to the subway station of the same name. <strong>It was opened in 1977 as a civilian shelter in the event of a nuclear attack<\/strong> and had the capacity to house 3,339 people for several weeks.
