In it, Dante wrote these words in dark paint on the gates of Hell: "Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate" (Abandon all hope, you who enter here). This described the most terrible sentence for those condemned to Hell: to lose all hope of reaching Heaven and being with God, a hope that is retained by those who endure the harsh punishments of purgatory, sometimes for a very long time.

Sánchez's efforts to make us lose hope

These days I'm reminded of those verses by Dante when I see the discouragement that is gripping many Spaniards in the face of the corruption and mafia in the Sánchez government. It's an understandable discouragement. After all, it's hard to work every day and pay taxes religiously to support a political power that behaves criminally and destroys trust in democratic institutions, a trust that is one of the foundations of our coexistence.

Since coming to power in 2018, Pedro Sánchez has invested a great deal of effort in confronting the Spanish people, and he hasn't done so on a whim. We're talking about an unscrupulous politician who knows that the more polarized society is and the more fanatical his followers are, the more immune they will be to scandals like those affecting the government, Sánchez's personal circle, and his party. Having such a disastrous government and seeing it undermine democratic checks and balances with impunity is terrible and should make us reflect on the changes our democracy needs so that something like this doesn't happen again.

The messages that socialist propaganda is spreading

The problem is that many will be asking: Is there light at the end of the tunnel? Will Sánchez fall or will he consolidate his hold on power like a tick, destroying Spain? For now, he has already done immense damage to our economy and, above all, to our rule of law, and he doesn't seem willing to back down. On the contrary: The more cornered this autocrat feels, the more dangerous he becomes, and that makes him a top-level threat to our democracy.

It is no coincidence that one of the messages most widely spread by socialist propagandists is that we still have at least two years of Sánchez left, which is the time that would pass until the next general elections, unless there are early elections, a possibility that Sánchez has actively and passively denied. The socialists want us to lose all hope that the damage they are doing can be undone, they want us to believe that no one will be able to remove them from power and that we should forget forever about the political alternation typical of a democracy. It is not a new message: it is the same one that the European communist dictatorships transmitted until those tyrannies collapsed between 1989 and 1991.

A message from 'Don Quixote' that we should never forget

At this point, what Spanish socialism is doing is a shameless display of power, a display typical of those who believe they have the right to abuse the authority conferred by parliament, using it to undermine democracy itself. This display aims, first of all, to make us lose hope of being able to defeat socialism, because without hope we are more easily manipulated.

After all, throughout history, those who have rebelled against tyranny did so because they had some hope of success, or simply moved by a love of Liberty that goes beyond any attempt at discouragement, a profound love that the greatest Spanish writer, Miguel de Cervantes, expressed in this quote from Chapter LVIII of "Don Quixote" that I like to remember so much:

Freedom, Sancho, is one of the most precious gifts that heaven has bestowed upon mankind; no treasures that the earth holds nor the sea conceals can equal it; for freedom, as for honor, one can and should risk one's life.

An indomitable spirit that has not disappeared in Spain

With these words, Cervantes captured one of the characteristics of the indomitable spirit that has characterized the Spanish people throughout history, a spirit that today, despite so many signs of decline, is still alive in our nation. This spirit is what drives the journalists, judges, and civil guards who bring socialist scandals to light, just as they once brought other scandals to light, resisting all kinds of pressure and attempts to intimidate them.

That indomitable spirit is also what moves all Spaniards who refuse to give up, who refuse to believe that Spain is beyond repair and who reject the absurd idea that socialism is an evil to which we must resign ourselves. We would all have wished to live in better times, but it is not up to us to choose the times in which we live. And I add here what another great writer, J.R.R. Tolkien, pointed out in his book "The Fellowship of the Ring": "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." I am clear about what to do with the time that has been given to me: fight for Freedom, Goodness and Justice, even if it takes me a lifetime. There will be time to rest later.

We will defeat that mafia and we have good motivations to achieve it

So please, don't be discouraged: this is what socialism wants. We are going to defeat this mafia, and we will succeed because we have more noble and stronger motivations than the dirty thirst for power that drives them. They will be defeated just as other tyrants and mobsters were, and with their defeat we will begin a new chapter in the history of Spain that must be presided over by the goal of preventing any other politician from doing anything like this to us ever again.

---

Photo: Elentir.

At the beginning of the 14th century, the master Italian poet Dante Alighieri wrote a famous work composed of more than 14,000 verses.

[10398
693,2721,10641,10796
post-59754","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-spain","tag-psoe","tag-pedro-sanchez-castejon","tag-political-corruption","tag-socialism
