In a few months, it will celebrate its 16th anniversary as a successful aircraft.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2021\/11\/25\/remote-carriers-airbus-project-to-convert-the-a400m-into-an-aircraft-carrier-airplane\/\">Remote Carriers: Airbus' project to convert the A400M into an aircraft carrier airplane<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/12\/05\/airbus-tests-in-spain-a-kit-to-convert-the-a400m-into-a-firefighting-plane\/\">Airbus tests in Spain a kit to convert the A400M into a firefighting plane<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p>Currently, <strong>there are already more than 130 A400Ms in service in nine countries<\/strong> (Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Spain, the United Kingdom), and next year another operator will be added to this list: Indonesia. <strong>The A400M has proven to be an excellent platform for tactical and strategic transport, medical evacuation, and in-flight refueling<\/strong> using the hose and drum system.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54598756974_3e36468f5b_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54598756974_637231ebff_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>these uses of the A400M are very few when compared to the abundant variants of one of its American competitors, the C-130 Hercules<\/strong>, which has been used for decades in transport missions, in-flight refueling, close air support, special operations, psychological warfare, maritime patrol, reconnaissance, meteorology, firefighting, electronic warfare, drone carrier aircraft and even bombing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54598772523_bb1e090f70_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54598772523_06b010bbc7_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, <strong>the A400M has many capabilities to explore and in fact Airbus Defence and Space has already started to show some of its future uses<\/strong>, as we can see in this video published today by this European aeronautical company on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@airbusds\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its YouTube channel<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Preparing the A400M of tomorrow. Europe&amp;apos;s most advanced tactical airlifter\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_DXWgv7w8aY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><big>Remote Carriers: a mothership for drones<\/big><\/p>\n<p>One of the missions this video exposes is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2021\/11\/25\/remote-carriers-airbus-project-to-convert-the-a400m-into-an-aircraft-carrier-airplane\/\">the Remote Carriers project that we saw here in November 2021<\/a>, <strong>which would turn the A400M into a drone launch platform<\/strong> within the framework of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program, with which Germany, Spain and France intend to launch around 2040 <strong>a sixth-generation fighter that will have a \"combat cloud\" whose pillars would be an A400M<\/strong> with the capacity to carry 12 heavy drones or 50 smaller drones.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54598756994_fefc1b8ff1_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54598756994_235b14c418_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><big>The A400M as an airborne communications hub<\/big><\/p>\n<p><strong>The A400M also plans to bring another capability to the FCAS project: an airborne communications hub.<\/strong> <em>\"At the heart of FCAS lies the Combat Cloud. This is where critical data comes together, is analysed and then disseminated. All of this requires a quick data exchange. Without it, responding promptly and effectively to complex situations would be impossible,\"<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbus.com\/en\/newsroom\/web-story\/2025-06-preparing-the-airbus-a400m-for-tomorrow\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Airbus notes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54597768982_d6b96d08c2_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54597768982_6a6e946a40_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Airbus adds: <em>\"In the context of connectivity, <strong>the A400M could act as a communications hub, distributing information to other airborne and ground-based systems<\/strong>. As a military aircraft with civil certification, the A400M is equipped with encrypted radio systems and the communication tools of passenger aircraft. <strong>All of these fall under the category of narrowband communications, which operate at low data rates<\/strong> as they are primarily designed to transmit voice and basic data. In the future, the A400M will need to switch to broadband to leverage higher data rates. <strong>A broadband satellite connection would then enable the aircraft to send and receive large amounts of data from anywhere in the world.<\/strong> In the event of disrupted satellite communication, a line-of-sight system would facilitate communication along a direct sightline with other platforms in the air or on the ground.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54598757009_5d27a762e7_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54598757009_8a3815224f_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><big>The kit that turns the A400M into a firefighting aircraft<\/big><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/12\/05\/airbus-tests-in-spain-a-kit-to-convert-the-a400m-into-a-firefighting-plane\/\">Another of the possible missions of the A400M was seen here in December 2023: firefighting aircraft<\/a>. Around that time, Airbus tested its A400M Firefighter Demo Kit Mk2 in Spain, a Roll-on\/Roll-off firefighting equipment that allows the A400M to be converted into a firefighting aircraft, with water or retardant. <strong>The tests with both fluids were carried out at the Maneuver and Shooting Range (CMT) in Uceda (Guadalajara)<\/strong>, with the participation of personnel from the 43rd Group of the Spanish Air Force, which operates Canadair CL-215T and CL-415 firefighting aircraft.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53378071299_c434a8ea62_b.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53378071299_c434a8ea62_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Airbus highlights that <em>\"<strong>any A400M in a fleet could be swiftly converted into a firefighting aircraft.<\/strong> The kit enables the aircraft to deliver 20,000 litres of water or retardant in a single drop, creating high concentration lines of up to 400 metres in length. Combined with its ability to operate from short and unpaved runways, <strong>this capability could transform the way fires in remote or hard-to-reach areas are tackled.<\/strong>\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54597793692_f6de4a4f07_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54597793692_c0de2ee96d_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><big>The A400M as an electronic warfare aircraft<\/big><\/p>\n<p>The above capabilities are likely to be used in Spain in the future. There is another that would also be of great interest to our country: electronic warfare, a capability that the Air Force lost years ago, with the withdrawal from service of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/01\/13\/tm-11-brujo-the-spanish-falcon-military-plane-whose-mission-was-not-to-transport-politicians\/\">the Falcon 20 TM.11 \"Brujo\"<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/06\/25\/the-spectacular-transfer-of-the-spanish-spy-plane-tm-17-4-reina-del-espectro-to-the-air-museum\/\">the Boeing 707 TM.17-4 \"Reina del Espectro\"<\/a> of the 47th Mixed Air Force Group, a unit dissolved in 2022 and whose missions were assumed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/ejercitodelaireydelespacio.defensa.gob.es\/EA\/ejercitodelaire\/es\/Unidades\/Unidad\/e49ae7d3-83aa-11ee-99f3-005056bf91c5\/?resourceId=e49ae7d3-83aa-11ee-99f3-005056bf91c5&path=\/sites\/internet.es\/.content\/unidad\/unidad_00024.xml#\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aerospace Intelligence and Targeting Center (CINTAER)<\/a>, which currently does not have aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding this, Airbus states: <em>\"<strong>The A400M is already equipped with a variety of state-of-the-art self-defence mechanisms.<\/strong> And it will become even safer: Airbus will equip 23 A400Ms of the German Air Force with DIRCM protection systems, protecting them against infrared-guided missiles. <strong>Regarding active jamming, the A400M could also be used as a stand-off jammer platform<\/strong> that operates outside of the contested airspace and can disable enemy systems from a safe distance.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54598757019_1fc3bda6e1_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54598757019_cbb8aa40ab_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In its video, <strong>Airbus also raises the possibility of increasing the payload of the A400M<\/strong>, which would likely involve introducing a longer model than the current ones, as has already happened with the C-130 Hercules. <strong>What is missing from the video is a maritime patrol variant<\/strong>, perhaps because Airbus has concentrated that capability in the CN-295 Persuader.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54598772528_5c2c170428_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54598772528_99d98293a4_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>---<\/p>\n<p><small>Images: Airbus \/ Ej\u00e9rcito del Aire.<\/small><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Airbus A400M Atlas made its first flight on December 11, 2009.
