As we saw then, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/07\/31\/farewell-to-the-third-squadron-of-the-spanish-navy-but-not-to-its-ab-212-helicopters\/\">the Spanish Navy's AB-212s were waiting for a second life with the Spanish Army's Airmobile Forces (FAMET)<\/a>, when they were transferred to the Sixth Manoeuvre Helicopter Battalion (BHELMA VI), created in 1986 and based in Los Rodeos, Tenerife.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53892968102_95093aeb0d_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The last flight of an AB-212+ with the Spanish Navy at the farewell ceremony of the Third Squadron held this Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at the Rota Naval Base (Photo: Armada Espa\u00f1ola).<\/div>\n<p><strong>For BHELMA VI, the arrival of the \"Gatos\" is a blessing<\/strong>. That battalion operated three AB-212s purchased in the 1980s and which, unlike the Navy's AB-212+, had not been modernized. <strong>Those three AB-212s from BHELMA VI should have been retired by 2017<\/strong>, and the arrival of the AB-212+ will surely serve to retire those three old AB-212s from service.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53558382434_48d7c700c4_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">One of the three AB-212s operated by the Army's BHELMA VI before the arrival of the Navy's \"Gatos\" (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/ejercitodetierra\/46420454194\/in\/album-72157678792297698\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ej\u00e9rcito de Tierra<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p>The Navy's \"Gatos\" have considerable improvements over their Army counterparts. Among other things, they were equipped with an EO\/IR surveillance system (using the detection and acquisition of light and thermal radiation), <em>\"an AIS transceiver for naval reconnaissance and <strong>a GPS navigation system with moving map display<\/strong>, incorporated into a mission tactical computer (MTC) that enables the integration of signals from all systems and displays them on the EFIS screens,\"<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/armada.defensa.gob.es\/ArmadaPortal\/page\/Portal\/ArmadaEspannola\/buquesaeronaves\/prefLang-es\/02flotilla-aeronaves-helicopteros\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Navy said<\/a>. <strong>All of these new systems are compatible for flight with night vision goggles.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54609465395_6ac040506a_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54609465395_9649b534d8_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pegasusaerogroup.com\/the-cordobesa-company-pegasus-entrega-el-primer-helicoptero-de-la-armada-tras-su-adaptacion-en-palma-del-rio\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The adaptation of the AB-212+ for the FAMET is the responsibility of the company Pegasus Aero Group<\/a>, based in Palma del R\u00edo (C\u00f3rdoba). In April 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MCANA_ET\/status\/1916773067071655967\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Canary Islands Command (MCANA) of the Army published these photos of the first of the six AB-212+ \"Gato\" delivered to the FAMET<\/a>, the ET-281 HU.18-20. The helicopter has lost its traditional naval grey and is now painted NATO green, the scheme already used by the AB-212s so far in service on the BHELMA VI.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54609354344_a3373721c3_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54609354344_f976dbeb09_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The new BHELMA VI helicopters are distinguished from their predecessors externally by the radar installed above their cockpit<\/strong>, as well as by the rescue crane installed next to the starboard hatch. The Defense Staff (EMAD) has published today <a href=\"https:\/\/emad.defensa.gob.es\/prensa\/noticias\/2025\/06\/Listado\/250623-ni-inicio-dedalo.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a news item<\/a> about the first deployment of the \"D\u00e9dalo\" Expeditionary Combat Group of the Spanish Navy in 2025, in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. In the photos published by EMAD we can see <strong>an AS-332B1 Super Puma helicopter from BHELMA VI operating on the aircraft carrier \"Juan Carlos I\" L-61<\/strong>, specifically the ET-506 HT.21-04.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54608279312_f3962016a6_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54608279312_80def703ba_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But without a doubt, the photo that will provoke the most nostalgia in our sailors is the following one, in which we see <strong>the AB-212+ ET-281 HU.18-20, one of the Navy's old \"Gatos\", aboard the L-61<\/strong>, with a Super Puma in the background. The EMAD has pointed out: <em>\"During the first days of activation, the Expeditionary Combat Group \"D\u00e9dalo\" has carried out different activities with the Army and the Air Force and Space Force. <strong>It has collaborated with the training of pilots of the Army's AB212 helicopters, of the Bhelma VI Battalion,<\/strong> integrated into the Canary Islands Command, which took off from the flight deck of the \"Juan Carlos I\". <strong>These helicopters were recently transferred from the Navy to the Army<\/strong>\".<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54609354379_09464edced_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54609354379_f639cf6193_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The last time I was aboard the L-61 was on July 11, 2024, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/07\/15\/the-ab-212-gato-helicopters-of-the-spanish-navy-seen-up-close-and-in-great-detail\/\">there were three gray-painted \"Gatos\" in the aircraft hangar<\/a>.
